ION

ION ABIN#19-062-7 – M, 3 Years

Foster dog name: Ion

Gender:  male

Age:  3 years old

Size/Weight:  medium  - 45 pounds

Color: white with black freckles

Breed:  English setter

Good with Children: loves everyone

Good with Dogs:  Loves them, playful

Good with Cats:  unknown, high prey drive would probably chase

House trained:  completely

Crate trained: yes, crates quietly

Leash trained:   needs a harness because his attention can shift to birds fairly quickly

Behavior:  Ion is energetic outdoors, circling the year at various speeds, depending of if he’s stalking birds & rushing back to see if any have shown up while he was at the other end.  Indoors, he’s quiet and affections but not needy.  Not aggressive at all towards other dogs nor any of the humans.

Activity Level:  Mostly mellow indoors but playful if interacting with other dogs, usually looking for birds if outside.  He’s not obsessed about them, and will still come when called.  He occasionally plays chase with the younger resident hound, and will pick up a ball but seems indifferent to stuffed toys so far.

Fence:  Required as he loves being outside but would go long otherwise.  Doesn’t jump his foster home’s 5 foot fence.

Medical History: Up to date on all shots, neutered, HW- and healthy. Good weight. Ion is from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. He has tested negative, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system. Potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Your vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The test typically costs $120-150 but varies from vet to vet.

Foster Comments:  Ion was found running loose with a chain embedded in his neck in Greece.  Taken to a vet to have it cut off, he found his way into A&BESSR’s rescue group.  He’s been a really easy foster, getting along instantly with the 3 resident dogs, and a springer mix foster who was here for his early weeks.  He just hangs out when inside, except occasional play periods with one of the hounds.  No food or other aggression at all.  He’s a quick eater unless distracted by birds. Ion rarely barks unless the others are going off about something, crates quietly at night and loves being groomed.  But birds are his primary focus.  He is already getting the grasp of some commands ‘In the house’, ‘stay’ and his foster mom is working on his leash manners.  This handsome boy is a diamond in the rough just waiting to be polished by a new owner.
