BECK AB#18-088 – M, 2 Years

BECK AB#18-088 – M, 2 Years

Foster dog name:  Beck

Gender:  Male

Age:  2 years old

Size/Weight: Medium – 32 lbs

Color:  Orange Belton

Breed:  English Setter

Good with Children: There are no children in the foster home but I believe Beck would do well with children 12 years and older as he is still learning his manners and does jump up on people.

Good with Dogs: Yes

Good with Cats:  No

House trained: Beck is a work in progress. He has not had any accidents in his crate however we are still working on accidents in the house. He is about 75% there.

Crate trained: Yes

Leash trained: Yes

Behavior: Beck loves his people and will come to you for some love. The only thing Beck loves more than his people are squeaker toys! Beck can keep himself occupied with his toys but will excitedly join in on a game of fetch. He is pretty good about bringing the ball back and dropping it for you to continue to throw. He really wants to please. We are working on some basic commands such as “Sit”, “Off” and “In” (to his crate). Beck is not super food motivated.

Activity Level: Beck is a typical young Setter having a very high energy level. He loves to play and go for walks. Beck will require a good couple hours of stimulating activity daily to keep him happy and out of trouble, especially if he is crated for a portion of the normal work day.

Fence: Beck does require a fence as he loves to have the freedom to run and hunt in his yard. Beck can jump quite high and at least a 6 ft fence would be recommended.

Medical History: Beck is neutered, UTD on his vaccines, heartworm negative and microchipped. Beck does have a non-dynamic umbilical hernia (basically like an outie belly button) that does not require surgery or cause him any discomfort or health issues. Beck also has occasional allergy issues which have been controlled with bathing and Benedryl as needed.

Foster Comments: Beck has quickly been acclimating to home life. He has been doing well in the crate for workdays and overnight. He is a very sweet boy that wants to please and be around his people. He is not really a cuddler but that could easily change. Beck is allowed on the furniture in our home and does well with the other dogs. Beck is quite independent but when in the mood, he and our other Setter will play tug with a toy or “wrestle” together. He is quite gentle when wrestling with our other Setter. We do have cats in our home but keep them separated because even with proper introductions, Beck still views them as “toys” so a home with out cats would be best. We are at about 75% with Beck’s house training. He has not had a single accident in his crate since he has been here. He does not give any signals that he is in need of going out to potty so take him out very frequently when he has access to the whole house. Beck’s energy level is typical of a young Setter – very high. Allowing him time to run and burn energy in the yard along with regular walks and toy play time has provided the stimulation he needs to keep him a happy boy and from being bored and getting into trouble. He has chewed on appropriate toys only as he always has access to them. Squeaker toys and especially squeaker tennis balls for outside are his favorite. He will chase the ball for hours whether we are throwing it for him or he throws it to himself.
