ANNA ABIN#19-062-10 – F, 7 Years

Gender: Female

Age: ~7 years

Size/Weight: 46 lbs

Color: Orange and White

Breed: English Setter/Springer Spaniel Mix

Good with Children: Home with older children recommended. Anna is extremely tolerant of young children, but is generally more comfortable with adults and older children. Small children should be supervised at all times.

Good with Dogs: Yes.

Good with Cats: No. Anna has a strong prey instinct and will chase small mammals. We had her tested at a rescue, and she is very interested in pursuing cats.

House trained: Yes.

Crate trained: Yes.

Leash trained: Yes. Anna is a dream on the leash. While she will pull a little when she discovers an interesting smell or sight, she can be coaxed back to her walk with a gentle pull. Anna is interested in exploring on her own, so you do need to keep her on the leash at all times and make sure she does not sneak out of open doors unexpectedly.

Activity Level: Low energy requirements. A single one hour walk, or two 30 min walks daily would more than satisfy her energy requirements. However, Anna will accompany her human for a 2 mile jog with enthusiasm.

Fence: Required. Anna scales the foster’s 6ft solid wood fence with ease. If she sees a squirrel or is merely interested in a stroll, she will easily jump a fence.

Training/Behavior: Anna is incredibly sweet but also wary and learning how to be loved. She enjoys pets and scratches, and will jump lightly on friendly humans. Anna needs basic obedience to teach her to consistently sit, stay, and come. Anna has no drive to chew and is only starting to learn that she has toys she can play with. She has expressed no interest in any dog toys or non-pet items.

Medical History:Anna is spayed and up to date on shots. She recently had her teeth cleaned and is in great health. She has two small cysts on her body. A biopsy came back negative, so these just need to be monitored. Anna may have allergies, and will need regular (twice weekly) ear cleaning to prevent recurring ear infections. Anna is taking glucosamine, and the vet suggested trying fish oil if her tummy tolerates it.

Anna originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150.

Foster Comments:

Anna is a sweet soft lady looking for a gentle and quiet home to teach her about love. Anna lived her entire life in a kennel before A&BESR brought her to the USA, and it shows in her lack of familiarity toys and wariness of new situations. When given gentle attention, Anna blossoms into a love bug who will nestle her head against you and wants to be close to her people.

This beautiful furry lady is incredibly well behaved. While Anna does bark and gets excited about wildlife and other dogs (when she is inside), she is generally very quiet and unobtrusive. When not gazing out the big bay window, she is quietly napping in her crate, under the table, or on a hot day splayed out on the hard wood floor. She is extremely low maintenance – all she wants is some love and a full tummy. Anna requires only a brief walk to stretch her legs and would be happy even as an apartment dweller with regular outings. She does not generally pull on the leash, and when she is distracted, will turn her attention back to the walk with a gentle tug.

Anna can be left unattended inside for several hours at a time - either crated, or out in a house. She has never chewed anything, even her toys! Anna will happily meet new adults, but can be timid and wary of small children. While she has done very well with my toddler, she is also uncomfortable around him. Anna will very gently take treats from his hand, and my son feeds her without Anna demonstrating any aggression or possessiveness over her food. While Anna would be okay with well supervised time with children, she would be most comfortable in a home without small children.

After a rough last few years, Anna is looking for a quiet family to love her and help her trust her people.
