GAIA

GAIA #18-023 – F, 2-3 years

Gender: Altered female

Age: Estimated at 2 years

Size/Weight: 46 lbs, approximately 21 inches at the shoulder

Color: Fawn and white roan

Breed: English Setter

Socialization/training: No known formal training since she was picked up as a stray. We’ve worked on some clicker training and are working on teaching her “Here, sit, whoa, place, crate, off, leave it.” She is interested in birds (pigeons) however because she doesn’t retrieve I’ve not turned her loose on a live bird. I have yet to give her a chance on a dead bird.

Good with Children: Unknown, we don’t have any.

Good with Dogs: Yes, we have 4 dogs of our own of varying ages. She gets along well with all of them.

Good with Cats: Yes, however I would suggest it be a dog-savvy cat. When she was first introduced to our cat she barked and when after him. Our cat stood his ground and didn’t put up with her bullying. Since then they ignore each other.

House trained: Yes – she will not ask to go out though. You can tell when she needs outside because she gets very restless and wanders around sniffing.

Crate trained: Very well crate trained. When she first arrived, she slept in her crate however we’ve learned that we can trust her at night so she’s earned the privilege of sleeping on a dog bed or sofa. She still is fed her meals in the crate.

Leash trained: Walks nicely on a leash.

Activity Level: Playful and likes to be outside. She’s a young dog with a moderate to high energy level.

Fence:   Has been trained on the invisible fencing system on our property and is very respectful of the boundaries. It was my understanding from others in Greece that she is a fence climber therefore any physical fence would need to be 6’ climb-proof fencing.

Behavior:  Gaia is an affectionate dog that would like to be invited into your bed. She likes to curl up on the sofa with you for a nap but will go lay on her bed if told to do so. Gaia isn’t so much as independent or stubborn as she is trying to figure out what her place is. I believe once she finds her person and permanent home she will do whatever it takes to please that person.

Medical History:
Spayed; has had one known litter of pups. Up-to-date on all medical. Gaia originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She tested negative for Leishmaniasis before coming to the US, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years.  Potential adopters must be willing to commit to having her tested annually for the next 7 years.

Foster Comments:
Gaia rides in the car well without getting sick and seems to enjoy the ride. Funny fact - Gaia is a hoarder and collector of things. She likes to take bones, toys, shoes, leashes and food bowls to her bed.

We have been fostering one of her pups, Pollux, they are both very fond of each other however I’m sure they will be fine going to separate homes.

Adoption Fee: $300.00

Foster Location: Veneta, OR

Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000 mile distance between adopters & foster home. Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000 mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000 mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog.
