BOB AB#18-127 – M, 10 Years

Foster dog name: Bob

Gender: Male

Age: 10

Size/Weight:  medium/45 pounds

Color: white with a very few tan speckles

Breed: English setter

Good with Children:  Yes

Good with Dogs:  Loves them

Good with Cats: Ignored barn cats

House trained: Yes

Crate trained: yes but he doesn’t love it

Leash trained: working on that

Behavior:  Independent and not needy BUT he loves attention, standing quietly and wagging his tail slowly to sucker the humans in to giving him lots of pets.  Doesn’t jump up, just enjoys attention.  A crowd surfer, he’ll move on to the next potential person to say hi & get more pets.  He does the same with dogs, big or small.  At a pet fair, he greeted every dog he met, from Bernese down to Italian greyhound with the soft wag.  There was a Blessing of the Animals & he looked attentively at the priest while he got his individual speech, letting a total stranger hold his face and still wagging.

Activity Level:  Laid back indoors, loves walks.  Reportedly hunts, though not bird obsessed.  He does like to patrol the hedges in his fenced yard and scrunch down when he spots larger ones.

Fence:  Fence only required if he’s out without a leash as he’d probably go in search of more humans to pet him, dogs to socialize with or birds to stare at.

Medical History:  Bob got neutered after coming to rescue, has all his shots and his heartworm negative with a clean fecal.  He has a slightly swollen lymph node in his jaw, probably the result of older teeth & is on antibiotics for 2 weeks for that.

Foster Comments:  When the hunting club in SC where Bob (perhaps not his original name) lived was downsizing, he came to A&B to get ready for a new forever home.  Charming folks on his ride north with his great attitude & laid back car manners, he arrived in PA & was neutered the same week.  Marking once or twice indoors, not bad considering that another male foster lived with him, as well as 2 cute gals, Bob wore a belly band for another 2 days until he figured, hey, they want me to do my business outside.  He’s now trusted uncrated all night & doesn’t get into any trouble, is quiet & just sleeps in whatever open dog bed he can find.  He loves being groomed, doesn’t mind being handled anywhere, or having his ears cleaned or collar grabbed. There’s no food or toy aggression.  He’ll pick up soft toys but seems to drop them if someone comes near.  It’s not known if he’s a swimmer or what hunting commands he knows.  He doesn’t seem to understand ‘sit’ but does come when called.  He’s doesn’t beg at the table and had to be invited inside from the fenced yard his first few days in foster.  With mature dogs, there are always hints of a prior life.  Despite not begging at the table or in the kitchen, when at a dog rescue event and the humans brought out hamburgers on buns, he got more interested in cookout fare than his foster mom has ever seen him before so there might have been some barbeques in his past.

Bob is one of the sweetest, least demanding dogs his foster mom has had around in years.  Don’t let his age fool you, he’s still active and has a lot to give.  His gentle nature would make him perfect for a family, and while he doesn’t have to have a dog buddy, he sure doesn’t mind them.
