AVRA ABIN#19-062-4 – F, 3 Years

Foster Dog Name: Avra   AB# 19-062-4

Gender: female

Age: 3 years

Size/Weight: 38 lbs.

Color: Blue belton (black and white)

Breed: English setter

Good with Children: Avra is very good with children. Our grandsons (4 and 10) were here for 2 weeks, and it was a mutual love thing. She played well with both of them, and there were no problems or concerns.

Good with Dogs: Yes, Avra is good with dogs. I do think she is better with male dogs or assertive females. She is a little overwhelming to my timid female setter, but she backs off when corrected.

Good with Cats: Yes, she is fine with our indoor cats. We haven’t tested her with cats in the yard since ours don’t go outside.

House trained: Yes, she had only one accident in the house when she first got here, and that was my fault when I didn’t see her at the door. She’s had no accidents in the crate.

Crate trained: Yes, she doesn’t love the crate, but she will go in. She no longer needs to be crated while we’re gone since she is well behaved in the house. Neither is she crated at night but sleeps in our room. With her energy level it would be hard for her to be crated much of the day and then again at night.

Leash trained: Avra does pull like our other setters but using a harness has helped so much.

Behavior:  Avra is a little sweetheart. She loves to run, run, run, but then she comes in and follows me everywhere. She is very affectionate and loves to cuddle. Her favorite evening spot is on someone’s lap or at our feet. She has slept several nights with her head on my shoulder, but she also settles comfortably in her own bed in our room when told. She sits well for her treats and while she waits for her food. We are working on getting her to sit before going out. She will stay for a bit, but it’s hard when you’re so excited about life. Avra has learned to take her treats gently.

Activity Level:  Avra has a high energy level, but after being able to run, she settles down happily in the house. Avra loves to play with people and other dogs.

Fence: I really think Avra needs a physical fence to safely run and get her energy expended. We have a 5-foot wooden fence that she has never challenged.

Medical History: Avra is healthy and up to date on her shots, heartworm, and flea/tick preventative. She is microchipped, and her number has been verified.

Avra comes from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She tested negative in Greece, but the parasite can remain dormant for years. Would-be adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. The test must be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test varies but is usually around $120 to $150.

Foster Comments: This beautiful little Greek girl was found running alone, probably abandoned. She is very loving and affectionate. If she isn’t out running, she is right by her person. She follows me everywhere like my little shadow. Her favorite toy is a ball, any ball. She loves chasing them. She almost brings them to us, but then runs away, wanting to be chased. Finally, she’ll bring it back so we can start the game over. She has learned to take the balls from our hands more gently. Avra just wants to be loved, and she has so much love to give in return. Her beautiful little freckled face gets the cutest expressions, and she has a beautiful coat with gorgeous ticking on her legs and shoulders. She will be a wonderful addition to a loving active home.
