TERRA AB#18-096 – F, 1.5 Years

Gender: Female
Age: 19 months
Size/Weight: 38 lbs

Color: Orange belton

Breed: English Setter

Good with Children: Yes, probably.  There are not any children living in Terra’s foster home, but she is generally friendly with everyone.  She is quite exuberant and does jump up though, so she would be best in a home with children over the age of 5.

Good with Dogs: Yes. Terra loves other dogs.  She is friendly and playful and loves to run, chase and wrestle with her many foster siblings.  Terra sometimes plays a little rough and she doesn’t always respect signals from other dogs that aren’t interested in playing so she might annoy older or less social dogs.  She definitely needs to go to a home with at least one other friendly dog.

Good with Cats: Unknown.  There are no cats in Terra’s foster home and she has not had the opportunity to interact with any since she came to rescue

House trained: Not yet.  At the time of writing her profile, Terra has only been in her foster home for 2 weeks, but she doesn’t have the hang of house-breaking yet.  She does not signal when she needs to go.  She tends to play hard then gulps down tons of water, so if I do not monitor carefully and let her out frequently, she will have an accident.

Crate trained: Yes. Terra goes into her crate for food or a treat.  She will settle down for a while and she sleeps through the night in her crate. If she sees you or there is other activity going on around her, she barks to get out and wants to be part of the action.

Leash trained: Somewhat.  There is a very large yard at Terra’s foster home so most of her exercise is running around the yard and playing with her foster siblings.  We have not practiced leash-walking a lot.  She does best with a harness (and one will go with her to her forever home).

Activity Level: HIGH energy.  Terra loves to run and play… and play, and play.  She doesn’t really like to be separated from her people for long, so she won’t stay out in the yard for hours unless you are there with her, but she will chase and wrestle with her foster brothers and sisters until you make her stop or the sun goes down!  She definitely needs an active family to play with her and help her burn off her energy.

Fence: VERY STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.  Terra is energetic and leash walks will not be adequate to give her the exercise she needs. I would only consider a family without a fenced yard if they had an explicit and very significant exercise plan for her.

Training/Behavior: Terra is very social and has a great temperament - she loves people and other dogs.  She is a very happy and friendly setter girl, but she was left in an outside pen for most of her life before coming to rescue, so she hasn’t had a lot of training, and she is still learning what it means to be a family dog. She jumps up on people with excitement and can do an Olympic quality plunge onto the sofa or into your lap. She is very sweet, but can be a bit overwhelming for people (or other animals) who aren’t used to her exuberance.  Like most young setters, she is full of puppy mischief – she particularly loves to steal bedding out of the kennels and chew them and drag them around. Like most puppies, Terra and her new family would benefit from a formal obedience class.

Medical History: Terra is UTD on all vaccinations and is on flea/tick and heartworm prevention.  When she arrived in rescue, she was already in heat, so she could not be spayed immediately, but her surgery is now scheduled for June 22nd, and she will be available to travel to her forever home at the end of June.  Overall, she has perfect body condition and is in great health.

Foster Comments: Terra is a very happy and energetic young pup.  Although she is 19 months old, in many ways, she is still very much a puppy.  She has boundless energy and loves to play and play.  She adores other dogs, and having another friendly canine companion is an absolute must in her forever home.  So far, Terra hasn’t met a person or other dog she doesn’t like - although the older ones don’t always like her quite as much!  She’s managed to entice even her older, calmer sister setters to play with her, and the twin boys adore her.

While Terra loves playing with other dogs, she also really loves her people. If I let her in the yard and come back in the house, she is soon at the door looking for me.  In her perfect world, Terra would prefer other dogs and her people to be near her all the time.  When she has burned off energy and is ready to settle down, she loves a good cuddle.  She likes to be picked up or to sit in your lap and will wrap her arms around you for a big hug.  When she gets a little too wild and crazy, I pick her up and hold her, and that usually settles her down and helps her relax.  She is a very affectionate pup.

Terra comes from a long line of active hunting dogs, and both her momma and at least one of her littermates are still very active hunters.  I do not hunt and cannot judge her capability in that regard, but her breeder said he thought she would do very well in the field.

Terra needs an active home with the time and patience to work with her on basic training and house manners.  If you are looking for a social, happy pup and don’t mind the occasional “wild child” streaks, Terra is the girl for you!
