Foster dog name:  Rusty

Gender:  Male

Age:  2-4 years

Size/Weight:  50 lbs

Color:  Red with white markings

Breed:  Nova Scotia Duck Toller/Setter or Springer mix

Socialization/training:  He is social and trainable.  Working with him every day.

Good with Children:  Yes

Good with Dogs:  Yes

Good with Cats:  depends on the cat

House trained: yes

Crate trained:  Yes, he came from a hunting lodge.  He goes into the crate and just lays down.  Since he behaves very well without a crate, I let him have the run of the house.   There are designated areas on the floor with doggie beds and that’s where he sleeps.  He follows me around the house.  I have rarely left him alone except to go out for an hour or so and he hasn’t ever been a problem.

Leash trained:  Rusty walks daily using a harness with a leash.  He usually walks pretty good on his leash.  Sometimes he can be stubborn and refuse to move in any direction.  He does this when he hears loud noises that startle him or unfamiliar surroundings.  Whenever we’re outside without a fence, I keep him on a tight leash because he is skittish.

Fence:  Rusty would do best with a fenced in yard because he has a lot of energy.  He wants to run and play chasing other dogs or running after toys or the ball.  He enjoys the snow and being outside in any kind of weather.

Behavior: Rusty is very kind and loving.  He leans on me when he cuddles.  When I talk to him, this guy makes eye contact and he will listen.  He communicates and is affectionate.  There is no excessive barking or whining.   He doesn’t bits, snap or growl.  I have not seen any aggression or food guarding.  If given the chance there has been some amount of digging and chewing on shoes, but I’ve corrected this behavior before any damage was done.  I have rarely left him all alone.

Medical History:  The hunting lodge that surrendered him did not give a medical history.  Since he came into Above and Beyond, Rusty has had a complete physical is up to date with his shots.  Rusty was neutered in April.  He’s a happy and healthy dude.

Foster Comments:   Rusty is special to everyone who meets him.
