Ruby Begonia F, 1 1/2 Years

RUBY BEGONIA – F, 1.5 Year

Foster dog name: Ruby Begonia

Gender: Spayed Female

Age:  1 1/2 years

Size/Weight: 48 lbs

Color: black, tan, brindle

Breed: No, I'm not a setter at all...Ruby's DNA results are back, She is primarily American Staffordshire with a little American Bulldog, Chow and German Shepherd.

QUICK OVERVIEW:  every now and then, the A&BESR President will rescue a non-setter like Ruby. These are our honorary setters!

Socialization/training:  Ruby was a stray at the local animal control. She was being overlooked (just a plain brown and black dog) until her foster mom came across her. As a stray, her history is unknown. Ruby loves other dogs and people. She does play rough, and needs to learn to play more gently. She is very smart and her motivation is praise and love from her person. She takes treats, etc very gently from one’s hand. It is obvious someone spent some time with her.

She would benefit from a basic obedience class to learn additional manners and to bond with her person. She understands sit and stay. She does not know how to play fetch.

Ruby completed a 5K walk with her foster mom and she did great with everyone during the walk. From little kids, to teens, to seniors.! she would go belly up to have her tummy rubbed. She also did fine with characters in furry mascot costumes and with the Segways and hover boards!

Good with Children: Unknown. Expect so as she is a happy go lucky girl. She does tend to jump up and has the puppy-like unawareness of her own strength and body boundaries. Thus, she could knock over younger children in her enthusiasm.

Good with Dogs: She gets along great with other dogs. Respects the small male alpha in her foster home and loves her foster sister, Sadie. She does play roughly with Sadie and needs to learn to play more gently.

Good with Cats: Unknown.

House trained: Ruby has only had accidents in the house post surgery. She is consistent in not peeing and every now and then has a poop accident as she doesn't really enjoy being in the yard without her person. She also tends to be so involved in playing with her foster sister that she forgets that she should poop while outside!  She does want her person to be with her and has a pretty solid potty routine down at this time, resulting in no accidents for the past month!

Crate trained: Yes

Leash trained: Yes, Ruby enjoys her walks and walks along nicely with her harness. She will plant her feet when she wants to sniff something out, but once she has had the opportunity to check it out she is ready to move along with a little reminder of we are on a walk!

Activity Level:  Ruby is playful, exuberant and just enjoys laying out in the sunshine. Her activity level is moderate and she simply enjoys being with her people

Fence: Ruby does enjoy exploring her backyard with the safety of a fenced area. She has developed good recall within the confines of her yard. She may be fine without a yard if she gets a couple of walks a day.

Behavior: Ruby is a character! She loves her people and responds to affection. She does wish to please her people. She enjoys the company of other dogs, but needs to be monitored to insure she doesn’t play too roughly. She gives my alpha boy his space when he demands it.

Medical History: Spayed, current on heartworm prevention, heart worm negative, current on vaccines, has had an umbilical hernia repaired, microchipped.

Foster Comments: Ruby has beautiful big brown eyes, gorgeous HUGE ears and a beautiful sleek coat in black, tan and gorgeous toffee brindling.

Ruby is a wonderful girl. She loves her people and has a loyalty to them. She would make a great walking/hiking partner and would excel in obedience training. Ruby is praise and  cuddle motivated. She doesn’t seem to have a mean bone in her body. She is not destructive and her only real flaw is that she jumps up on people (and she has big paws!). She is happy go lucky, enjoys cuddles, and enjoys meeting people of all ages. She loves her walks and loves car rides too! She is a gem who was simply being overlooked in the local shelter. She would love to have a family of her own to go on adventures with and to grow old with. Her foster mom is going to miss her when she leaves for her forever home.
