PUMPKIN AB#18-142-2 – M, 3 1/2 Months

PUMPKIN AB#18-142-2 – M, 3 1/2 Months

Foster dog name: Pumpkin

Gender: male

Age: born around August 15, 2018

Size/Weight: 13.2 lbs on Nov. 14, and growing! He’s the smallest of the puppies, we think he may be 30-45 lbs when fully grown.

Color: tricolor.  Black and white face, with a white and orange body.  Orange freckles all over!

Breed: springer spaniel mix.  Dad is unknown.  Mom is Honey, also being fostered with Above and Beyond Rescue.

Good with Children: Untested, but puppies and kids go together 😉

Good with Dogs: He likes to greet the adult dogs in his foster home, and will sometimes try to play with them.  If they’re not interested in playing, he finds something else to do.

Good with Cats: Untested.

House trained: In training.  He prefers going outside, but will go inside if you are not watching him closely.  He will show classic signs (circling and sniffing the ground).

Crate trained: No, but doesn’t mind sleeping in one.

Leash trained: He hasn’t had much practice since he’s not fully vaccinated.

Behavior: Pumpkin is the lover boy of the litter, and the littlest.  He approaches new humans with lots of interest, and will sit at their feet, patiently wagging his tail until he gets snuggled.  He likes to be carried around in your arms, to observe the world with you.  He sometimes shows aggression if he’s getting bullied by his siblings.  His foster parents have been quick to stop any bullying, and ensure everyone has their own food bowl.  Pumpkin has never shown aggression towards the humans, and doesn’t show aggression when everyone is being treated fairly.

Activity Level: Pumpkin is a typical puppy and has large amounts of energy for 1-2 hours, followed by 2-3 hours of napping.  When it comes to humans, he will greet you with a ton of energy.  After a few minutes of excited puppy kisses and bouncing, he will go play with his siblings or toys.

Fence:  Pumpkin does more waddling and sniffing than running.  He spends most his energy playing with his siblings rather than running.  Fences are still preferred for puppies up to 2 years, but Pumpkin may be satisfied by daily walks.

Medical History: Honey’s 4 puppies (Pumpkin included) were rescued from Kentucky, arriving at their home on October 20.  Not much is known about their history; Pumpkin was healthy weight and energy at his last vet visit.

Foster Comments:  Pumpkin is treat motivated.  He will sit for treats, and patiently waits his turn for his treat.  He will respond to “come here puppy!” if he sees you, and he will follow the pack if they’re running inside, but we’re still working on getting him to come to us if we’re not visible.  He is also learning what things are chew toys, and what things are not (fingers, toes, clothing, etc.), but luckily he prefers puppy toys and responds well to a verbal “NO!”
