PHOEBE AB#IN18-097-3

Phoebe AB#IN18-097-3

Gender: Female
Age: 6-7 months (approx. DOB Feb 2017)
Size/Weight: 20 lbs

Color: Gold

Breed: Golden Retriever Mix (Golden Retriever mom; unknown dad)

Good with Children: There are 2 older children in Phoebe’s foster home, and she loves.  She is a little afraid of toddlers.  She does well with kids above the age of 5 as long as they introduce themselves slowly.

Good with Dogs: Yes. Phoebe loves other dogs.  She is in a foster home with 1 large dogs and is respectful and submissive.  She likes to follow the lead of her other furry siblings.

Good with Cats: Unknown.  There are no cats in Phoebe’s foster home, but she is a young puppy and could probably learn to live comfortably with cats.  She is not very big, so she wouldn’t be a big threat to a cat during the transition process.

House trained: Not yet.  Phoebe is a puppy and is still learning about potty training.  She does well if she is taken out frequently and if you watch her signals, and she has had very few accidents in the house.

Crate trained: Doing well.  Phoebe does love her foster mom people and when she is first in a crate she might bark for a little bit if you are not in eye sight.  But she can does calm down after a few minutes. At night she goes right in and sleeps all night long. She has not messed in her crate and loves her stuffed bunny in with her.

Leash trained: Mostly.  Phoebe is pretty good on leash.  She has not learned to heal, but she walks fairly well and does not pull too much unless she is hunting bugs. She loves to chase flying objects, especially butterflies.

Activity Level: Moderate.  Phoebe likes to have a romp in the yard and follow her furry sibling around, but she is generally prefers to be with her people.  She can definitely keep up on a long walk or hike.

Fence: Preferred.  A fenced yard is always preferred, but Phoebe loves her multiple long walks, hikes and other activities with her family.

Training/Behavior: Phoebe hasn’t been in her foster home very long at the time of posting, and, like any puppy, she would benefit from an obedience class. She naturally wants to please you and follows her people everywhere.  Like most puppies, Phoebe still chews on things, but is easily redirected with an appropriate toy.  She does jump up a lot to get attention and she likes to be held and cuddled.  She also loves belly rubs. She can be a little fearful of men, and needs time to become comfortable with some of them, but not all.  She loves the 2 boys in her foster home, and they are 10 and 12.

Medical History: Phoebe is healthy, UTD on all vaccinations, and is on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. She will spayed on Oct 2nd and will be available to go to her forever home any time after Oct 6th once she is fully healed.

Phoebe originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She was removed from Greece as a puppy, so it is unlikely she would ever develop Leishmaniasis, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years.  Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab.  The test typically costs $120-150.

Foster Comments:
If you are looking for a pocket sized golden with less hair and smaller in size than look no further.  I love to chase butterflies and be outside. I am doing well with my crate training and sleep through the night. Sometimes I might cry a little when my foster mom leaves the room, but I am learning she always comes back. I am working really hard on house training and leash training.  I love the boys living in my house and all their friends that are older than 5. I have to say, sometimes those toddlers are a little scary!   I like when their friends great me nice and easy so we can say hi properly. I am working on what foster mom calls “four on the floor”. They move fast! The lady of the house is super sweet, I follow her around all day like a shadow. I must say, the man of the house and I are taking it slow to get to know one another.  Sometimes men, like toddlers are a little scary!  When I first got here I was so scared of those “stairs” but the big fluffy of the house showed me how to run up and down them and now I cannot stop! It is so much fun.  My foster Mom said I do great when I have a slow intro to new things, like scary pumpkins and trash cans, but once I sniff them I am fine.

We know Phoebe’s mom was a Golden Retriever (and she has mom’s coloring and pretty coat) but we suspect dad was something smaller because Sunny is pretty small for a Golden.  She is currently 20 lbs at 6 months old, and my vet does not think she will get very big.  She guesses that her final adult weight will be somewhere between 20-30 pounds.

Phoebe is very loving, affectionate and happy (and a little bit spoiled) and she will quickly steal your hear!
