MINA

MINA ABIN#18-114-2 – F, 2 Years

Foster dog name: Mina

Gender: Female

Age: 2 years

Size/Weight: 25 pounds

Color: White with brown markings

Breed: English Setter/mix

Socialization/training: Mina tends to be a shy girl who needs a little distance to observe and assess the situation. Once she feels comfortable, she will approach strangers.  Mina is gentle taking treats, knows sit, comes to her name when called and gets excited at evening meal time. She has begun to bark from the kitchen doorway as if telling her foster dad to hurry up! Mina rides well in the car, sleeps in a dog bed in her foster parent’s room and is trustworthy when left home without being crated.

Good with Children: yes, if the environment is too busy for her comfort, Mina will move away

Good with Dogs: yes

Good with Cats: shows no interest

House trained: yes

Crate trained: yes, has not needed crating to be safe when left home

Leash trained: excellent on a leash

Activity Level: Moderately active, playful, loves to be near you to nap

Fence: Physical fence is what her foster family has.

Behavior: Mina hid for the first week she was with us. We took her food to where she was and encouraged her to go outside to potty. Once she became comfortable, Mina would stay on the sofa as we walked by. After about another week she was allowing us to pet her and rolled over for belly rubs. Mina loves her belly rubbed and immediately rolls over for it with people she is comfortable with. When treats are being passed out, Mina joins the others but tends to stay at the back or side of the pack. She loves the daily pack walk and shows moderate prey drive with squirrels and some birds.

Medical History: Up to date on vaccines, spayed, microchipped, Heartworm Negative and on preventative, no significant medical history. Mina originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She was tested before coming to the USA and her test was clear, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years.  Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab.  The test typically costs $120-150.

Foster Comments: Mina was a stray that came to the mainland in Greece following a boat ride of several hours. She was very shy and needed time to build trust when she first came to us. Mina likes to go to pet friendly stores, rides very well in the car, plays well with other dogs and is very sweet. She is not demanding and picks up on the routines in the house readily. Mina would do well as a companion to someone who is home often and liked to go for walks frequently. She is rarely vocal except when excited about something specific, like her dinner! Mina allows grooming done without any difficulty. Once she trusts you completely, you could not have a sweeter and politer furry companion.
