MARTIS AB#IN-18-114- 5 – M, 2 1/2 Years

Name: Martis

Gender: Male

Age: 2 1/2 years

Size/Weight: approx 40 lbs

Color: Black & White

Breed: English Setter

Good with Children: Martis has been with a few children as a foster and has been fine with them. He does like to jump, so with young kids, would need more training.

Good with Dogs: Martis  is good with dogs, very friendly upon meeting them. Experiences a little jealousy with a male that is intact. I believe he would be fine with females or possibly another neutered male.

Good with Cats:He has been tested with cats. He does well after initial meeting. He does want to chase some if the cat runs, but he has been fine with the cats he has been around. With training should be fine.

House, crate, leash trained: Martis is fine in the house. He does go out frequently, but that is common with a young dog.

He is also great in a crate. He is used to going in and out of his crate every night. He learned the word, “Kennel”, and as I say that, I give him a treat, and he goes right in.

He is ok on leash. He is fine on it, just needs to learn the “Heel” command better. But he sees the leash and gets so excited for his walk.

Activity Level: Martis is a high energy setter! He is very curious and loves to run!! He runs around in a fenced in yard for quite a while. Loves chasing birds. He goes for runs in big fields and trails too. He does have an off button, so he loves to snuggle up after his energy releases, with his human.

Fence: A fenced in yard would be ideal for this boy. He is not fully obedience trained, so I am afraid of him taking off on me. Although he has been learning his commands in English and is doing very well.

Training/Behavior: As mentioned above, Martis has had some training. Basically he just needs a patient person to keep teaching him his commands in English. He came to me as a foster knowing mostly Greek commands!

He must have been trained on birds before as he is VERY  birdy and has such an interest to please.

With more training he will be a very good companion to someone.

He needs to be worked with to not jump up.

He can not be let loose to run free as he may take off. With proper training, as with most setters, he could later on do this, but not right away.

Medical History: Martis came to me with his medical records UTD. He does have a skin sensitivity, so he is on Limited Diet food, Natural Balance. He is thin, so I have tried increasing his food intake very slowly.

Martis originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. He was tested before coming to the USA and his test was clear, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years.  Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab.  The test typically costs $120-150.

Foster Comments:  I just love Martis. All my friends do also. He is very sweet and smart and so lovable. He has been socialized some in his short time with me. He gets exercise just about every day. He wants to be with his human all the time. He even sits curled up in the bathroom when I shower.

He has been sleeping in his crate at night. Aside from a few whimpers the first night, he has been fine.

As mentioned above, he has been learning all his basic commands in English.

He would benefit from an adult dog obedience class and I think would do very well.

He would be best if not in a house with an intact male. That is the only issue I have come across with this boy.

He would thrive with an active family that includes him on outdoor adventures. Or a single person who is a runner or hiker or even skier, would be great for him.

Anyone who enjoys bird hunting, would really like this dog. He is small and fast and has a tremendous nose!

His favorite little habit is grabbing his stuffed toy and prancing all over the house with it, when his human gets home, or he gets out of his crate. He loves his stuffed toys.
