LEYLA

LEYLA ABIN #19-245 – F, 1 Year

Foster dog name:  Leyla

Gender: female

Age: 1 y

Size/Weight: 34#ish

Color: Orange and White

Breed: English Setter

Socialization/training: Leyla has had no formal training and is still learning a second language. Leyla has a lot of fear so it is taking her longer to acclimation to a new environment and learn that people can be her friend and can be kind to her. It is recommended that Leyla goes to a trainer that specializes in dogs with fear. We’ve been unable to find anyone in my area.

Good with Children:  We have not had many children around.Since she is fearful of lots of activity in the house it would be best for her to be in a child free home.

Good with Dogs: Leyla loves playing with our dogs, size isn’t an issue, but she loves running with my Pointer the most.

Good with Cats: yes, dog savvy cats, ones that will tell her it’s not all fun and games.

House trained: yes, she is pretty scheduled and follows the lead of the other dogs. She has never had an accident in the house. She seems to always go before coming in if outside for an extended period.

Crate trained: yes, very much recommended as she does like to chew on things she shouldn’t, still a lot of puppy in her.

Leash trained: She will pull some.We still use the double leash on her because of her fears, she will try to back out of her collar if spooked.

Activity Level:  Active, loves to run and play with her foster siblings.Very normal for a young Setter.

Fence: YES, a must. A very secure fence, she will try to go under if the squirrels are teasing.

Behavior: Leyla is very shy but once she has warmed up to you, she enjoys the attention. It took us about two weeks of “Groundhog Day” to wake up in the morning and not be afraid of us when we would first open her crate. We would just have to do the meet & greet/trust building as if she had never seen us before, everyday those first two weeks for her to really understand we were not going anywhere, and we were not going to hurt her. This fear is real in her.She needs a family that will work with her to continue to build her confidence and help her overcome her fears. She will get a little grumpy if another dog enters her space when she trying to sleep or has a bone. She’s ok with the cats walking by her food dish while eating but because of my dog’s, I’ve not tested what she will do if they walk by.Leyla is ok with me touching her while eating. She will not eat kibble out of our hands. It took her 8 weeks to take a treat out of our hands.

She believes that she is a mighty squirrel hunter but doesn’t seem to notice birds as much.Leyla will do best in a home with other dogs.

Medical History: Leyla is spayed, microchipped and UTD on her required vaccinations. Leyla is on Heartworm and flea preventative.

Leyla is from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She has tested negative, but the parasite that is transmitted by sandflies can remain dormant in the system.  Potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years.  Your vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab.  The test typically costs $120-150 but varies from vet to vet.

Foster Comments: Leyla arrived at our house November 25, 2019.Notes from Greece state she was found in Paiana in June 2019.She appeared abandoned, most likely because she didn’t do her job.Leyla is sweet and beautiful but still very skittish around new people. She is friendly with other dogs but will need a patient family who will give her time to trust and overcome her fears.

Since being in the states, it’s very clear that Leyla will need a special home that understands and it willing to work with her fear and self-confidence issues. She is easily spooked, and her fear scale can go off the chart just watching people walk up the street from the window. When afraid, she will run and hide.Leyla needs a home that is quiet without a lot of coming and going. We do treat her as a flight risk, still. Our guard is never down when she is outside, a funny sounding car will send her in a panic.

Leyla loves her toys and to kill her toys, we have had to work on her no killing of shoes & dog/cat beds. Thankfully, she is getting better and learning which toys are ok to chew. Her favorite thing is running and playing with her foster siblings. That is where all her confidence is.She has great dog play skills. She warmed right up to my Pointer and takes a lot of clues off her.Since Leyla took to our dogs so fast, we are looking for a home that has other friendly dogs in the home to help Leyla adjust to another move.

Leyla still does puppy things plus with her fears, for her safety, she needs a home that is willing to use a crate with her.She likes to cuddle in our bed for short periods, she will lay right on top of you and enjoy her ears or belly being scratched. She may do fine there all night, but I’ve not tested it.

Like most Setters, Leyla likes running in mud, thankfully she is ok taking bathes. We’ve not found a sensitive spot on her when being touched.

We believe with continued trust and confidence building, Leyla will blossom into a wonderful family member.

A home with previous English Setter experience is a must for Leyla
