KOUKLA

KOUKLA ABIN#19 – 209 – F, 3 Years

Gender: Female
Age: 3 years
Size/Weight: ~35 lbs

Color: Blue Belton

Breed: English Setter

Good with Children: There are no children in Koukla’s foster home, but she is gentle and sweet with everyone, so I am sure she would be good with kids.  Small children would need to be supervised to be sure they are gentle with her.

Good with Dogs: Yes, absolutely.  Koukla lives in a foster home with 9 other dogs and has also lived with a number of other foster dogs, and she gets along well with everyone.  She cuddies with her setter siblings and doesn’t even mind when they jump all over her.

Good with Cats: Unknown, but probably ok. There are no cats in Koukla’s foster home, but she is very gentle and doesn’t exhibit much prey drive.

House trained: Mostly.  Koukla has been doing very well with her housebreaking, but she cannot hold it for very long periods of time and has had an occasional accident overnight if I don’t make sure she poops before bed.

Crate trained: NO.  Koukla DOES NOT CRATE WELL.  She gets very upset if crated and barks loudly. Fortunately, she is well behaved in the house and does not need to be in a crate.

Leash trained: Mostly.  We do not leash walk a lot, but Koukla wants to stay with her people and walks pretty well on leash.

Activity Level: Moderate.  Koukla likes to have a run in the yard and an occasional chase with her setter brothers, but she is generally quite calm.  She is very chill in the house and just wants to be close to her person.  She is happy to snuggle with you on the couch or lay by your feet or quietly follow you around the house.  She is a very calm and gentle setter.

Fence: Preferred.  A fence is always preferred, but Koukla is not a very active setter and she would be fine with a few walks and potty outings on leash.

Training/Behavior: Koukla has not had any formal training, but she is naturally very well behaved.  She comes when she is called and does not chew or misbehave.  She occasionally puts her feet up on you to get love and attention.  She gets along with everyone and is a really good girl.

Medical History: Koukla has quite a long medical history.  We rescued her in May of 2019 after she had been hit by a car and left on the side of the road.  She had a few broken ribs and a dislocated hip.  When we first rescued her, she could barely walk and her back legs just dragged behind her.  With a lot of vet care, she has improved dramatically, and now walks, plays and runs.  She has been to see a neurologist in the USA and he was impressed with how far she has come and how well she has healed.  According to the neurologist, she will probably always have some “neurological deficit” in her hind end, but she is not in pain, and it does not affect her joy for life or her ability to live a long and high-quality life. She does sometimes wobble a  a bit on her back legs (particularly when she’s tired) and she does slip some on slick surfaces. Koukla originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic.  She was tested right before coming to the USA and her tests were negative, but the parasite can remain dormant for up to 7 years, so her new family must commit to testing her annually for the next 7 years.  She is spayed, up to date on all her vaccinations and current on flea/tick and heart worm prevention.

Foster Comments:
Koukla is one of the sweetest setters I have ever fostered.  She is calm, gentle and loving.  She gets along brilliantly with everyone she meets. -  human and dog alike.  All she wants is to be close to her person and to get lots of love and snuggles.  Her favorite thing is to snuggle beside you on the bed or the couch, and she will lay beside you and snore very gently in your ear ☺

Koukla has beautiful big brown eyes, and she looks up at you like you are the center of the universe.  She will follow you all over the house and just wants to be wherever you are.  She is very well-behaved and quiet as long as she can be near you.

Koukla had a really hard life before coming to rescue and she was in terrible shape when we first rescued her, but she has come a long way and is doing so well.  Because of her injuries and her history, it is important that she have a family who will handle her gently and always treat her with patient kindness.   Furniture privileges are a MUST for Koukla, and I will not consider any applicants who do not allow their dogs on the sofa with them.

Koukla deserves the very best life has to offer… and she will give you unconditional devotion in return.
