KARLITOS

KARLITOS ABIN#18-162-6 – M, 1 Year

Gender: Male
Age: 1 year
Size/Weight: Approx 40-45 pounds

Color: Tri-colored

Breed: English Setter
Good with Children: There are no children in Karlitos’ foster home, but he is friendly and loves to play, so he would probably enjoy children.

Good with Dogs: Yes. Karlitos adores other dogs. He is in a foster home with a variety other dogs. He is very good with all of them. He likes to play and follows the lead of her other furry siblings.  He is submissive and a little hesitant with large dogs at first.

Good with Cats: Yes. There are 2 cats in Karlitos’ foster home. He doesn’t really pay attention to them. When he wants to cuddle with them, he washes them and they wash him. If the cats don’t want to be bothered, they swat him and he goes away nicely.

House trained: Needs a little more help. He does well if he is taken out frequently and if you watch his signals, but he does still have some accidents in the house if let for long periods of time. He does keep his crate clean and does not mess in there at all.

Crate trained: Yes.  Karlitos will go into the crate for a treat.  He might fuss for a few seconds, but he settles down pretty quickly and does well through the night.

Leash trained: Karlitos does okay with leash-training. He does pull some, but working on it.

Activity Level: Average.  Karlitos is a fairly typical setter.  He loves to romp and play and has a lot of energy for play time, but he is also content to chew on a toy or settle in for a nap.

Fence: Preferred.  A fenced yard is always preferred, but Karlitos would probably be ok if he had lots of walks or hikes and a spacious home that he can play in.

Training/Behavior: Karlitos has been with his foster about 3 months at the time of posting, and he would benefit from an obedience class. He still chews on things, but he is easily redirected with an appropriate toy.  He does jump up a lot to get attention. He seems to hhave separation anxiety. Once he sees you after all night or after being gone all day, he just wants some time to be snuggled before you go about your business. His new family will need to work with him on this.  He is a smart dog and learns quickly.  Overall, he is friendly and loves everyone (dog, cat and human).  He is a very happy and social puppy.

Medical History: Karlitos is healthy, UTD on all vaccinations, and is on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. Karlitos is neutered. Karlitos originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic.  He tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years.  Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab.  The test typically costs $120-$150.

Foster Comments:
Karlitos is a happy and playful dog.  He seems to love everyone – human, dog, and cats alike. He always wants to be in the middle of the action.  Karlitos loves to play with other dogs and prefers to play with same size or smaller until feels comfortable with larger…then he is fine.

After he has had enough play time, Karlitos will cuddle up on the couch or be very comfortable to snuggle right next to his human.

Karlitos likes attention and cuddles, but he is not a very needy dog and he doesn’t need constant attention, that is once he has his initial snuggle time.  He’s happy to have it, but he will also entertain himself with a toy or a treat.  He is very food motivated and learns quickly.
