Harvey AB#18-034

Harvey AB#18-034, M, 6 years

Foster dog name: Harvey  AB#18-034

Gender: male-neutered

Age: ~6 years

Size/Weight: 45 current; ideal-40; measures 19” to the top of his back at the base of his neck.

Color: black/white

Breed: ES Mix – probably with a Beagle as he has shorter legs, the head shape, long ears and a bark more like a Beagle.  The markings of a setter, coat is slightly longer than a Beagle but shorter than a setter, and the behavior is that of a Beagle/hound type dog.

Socialization/training:  Harvey LOVES to walk and needs the daily structure of a long walk or he can become anxious.  We walk every day with at least three other dogs and everyone who meets Harvey loves him and comments on his good looks.

Good with Children: yes and gentle also

Good with Dogs: yes, he lives in a multiple dog household

Good with Cats: yes, we have a resident cat that adopted us last winter!

House trained: yes

Crate trained: yes; he used to tremble when I put him in his crate to leave, but now he is fine.  He settles down and has his music, comforter, nylabones and two other dogs with him in the room.  He doesn’t eat his blanket, destroy or soil his crate and when I come home he is fine and happy.

Leash trained: yes – to repeat, LOVES and NEEDS to walk!

Activity Level:  Harvey does not self-exercise in the yard, he needs an adopter who is committed to making sure he gets daily exercise in the form of a good, long walk!  He is fairly mellow, walks at a nice pace, calm in the house, likes sitting in sun in the backyard.  Has energy for an active family/person but also laidback too.

Fence:  Ideally fenced back yard; he is not an escape artist and a 4’ chain link would be fine.  He could probably be trained to an invisible fence but dogs outside in an invisibly fenced yard need supervision so a hard fence ideal.

Behavior:  He likes cuddling and attention but also likes to curl up and take a nap on a quilt in an upstairs nook when tired; he very much loves people. He often curls up with 1 of the other dogs in the house- so he’s fine on his own or with other dogs when he naps.  Without daily exercise he may seem anxious; this is the hound personality that needs to be on the hunt.  Harvey came to this foster home with storm phobia, which has abated as he has gotten more exercise and slimmed down, but will likely always be there as he may be sensitive to the change in barometric pressure.  I am using a Composure Pro chew as needed.

Medical History:  Neutered and vaccinations and preventatives current; teeth just cleaned! Microchipped

Foster Comments:  Harvey was very fortunate to have been rescued from an Iowa shelter by Above and Beyond. As a Setter mix, most probably a Setter/Beagle mix, he might have been passed over by A&B. But Harvey is a great dog and the shelter and A&B knew that.  He is currently living in a foster home in NC with 7(!) other dogs and he gets along so well with all of them AND a cat who adopted the home last Winter. On walks through the neighborhood (one with lots of dogs) he is great on-leash and is friendly to other dogs and people and is gentle with toddlers and young children.
He has been on a slim-down program and has lost weight and is approaching his ideal weight of somewhere close to 40 lbs.  He has some anxiety with storms which is now much better with daily walks and the use of a natural calming chew if a storm is coming. He feels safe in his crate during a storm. He also loves listening to classical music when foster mom is gone!  Most important of all to know about Harvey is that he is happy, affectionate and always a good boy. Why no one came looking for him when he was first picked up as a stray is a mystery, but he is very lucky to have so many people who have rallied behind him to give him a new life. He will do best in a home that wants a dog to be part of the family and is committed to daily walks with him.
