HARLEY

HARLEY AB#18-153 – M, 8 Years

HARLEY (A sweet mellow gentleman)

Gender: Male

Age: 8 years (DOB: 08-05-10)

Size/Weight: 63 lbs, 24” at shoulders

Color: Tri

Breed: English Setter

Socialization/Training: Harley is good with all people. He is very much a people person. He is well trained especially off leash. He’s getting better but still needs work on his leash walking. Harley is a professionally trained hunting dog but hasn’t hunted in a couple years. He is very good and responsive at recall. According to his previous owner he has a very good nose but is a bit unreliable at retrieving. He was trained to an electronic collar. He is crate trained, and has a travel crate that will come with him if you like. We are working on “sit” for his dinner bowl. He’s not perfect yet but most of the time he remembers without being told. Harley is house broken, never an accident. When I first got him he alerted at the door when he needed to go out. Once he learned the dog door he uses it whenever he needs to go out. He holds himself when he is in his create.

Harley is ok with other dogs. He’ll stand his ground if there is an issue. He’s not really interested in other dogs, doesn’t really like to share his person with them, or play with them. He lived for 8 years as an only dog and would be best as an only dog. He has strong prey drive and would be best in a home without cats.

Activity Level: Harley is very mellow and not high energy. He does like to explore and roll in the grass/dirt/leaves. He likes to go for walks and car rides. He is reported to love water. Someone who has room for a bit of romping and or swimming would be nice, or someone that will take him for hikes, walks or swimming would be nice.

Fence: Harley will wander and hunt if not confined so a fence would be best. Harley is not a fence jumper, so a high block wall probably won’t be necessary.

Behavior: Harley loves his people and will run to the neighbors to say hi. He likes to be hugged: no tensing up or wiggling for this guy he melts right into you without leaning all his weight on you. He loves to be petted and will climb into your lap now and again. He will be your shadow. He likes to be on the couch but hasn’t been allowed on the bed. He is not one to gaze deeply into your eyes but he is definitely affectionate. For some reason people like to hug him, and I’ve seen him get more kisses on the top of his head than any other dog. Even from people that I’ve never seen kiss a dog before. Just something about this gentle, mellow boy.

Like all pups he has a couple of things that need more work: He likes to get tissues out of the bathroom trash and shred them. Now and again he will try and jump on you (getting much better there); now and again out of the blue he will counter surf. And he likes to go outside and bark at nothing in particular especially when I’m gone. I have been crating him when I leave, and is he very good with crating, but he might be best in a home where there is someone home most of the time. He does really well at being bathed, and having his ears flushed. He is a work in progress with teeth brushing.

Medical History: Harley came to me with a chronic open wound. The wound was cultured and he had surgery.  That seems to be doing very well.

He was very stiff and had trouble getting into the truck when he came to me. I have put him on some joint supplements and he is doing so much better. He isn’t as stiff and he is building up his muscles again. The best home for him would be with someone willing and capable of keeping him on the supplements.

He came from Oregon and I was told that he didn’t have allergies; however, here we are just starting the allergy season and I’ve noticed that he seems to be licking his feet a lot. So he might have environmental seasonal allergies depending on where he lives.

Foster Comments: Harley is so sweet and such a people oriented, mellow, gentle dog. He is easy to love and wants to please. He is well trained and generally very obedient. He is such a sweet boy. For the most part he needs just a bit of attention to a couple of training issues.
