ARCHER (ELVIS)

ARCHER (ELVIS) #18-031 – M, 1 year

Foster dog name: ARCHER (Elvis)

Gender: Neutered Male

Age: 1yr and 1 month

Size/Weight: 50lbs

Color: White with black speckles and black ears

Breed: English Setter

Socialization/training: Archer is working on learning manners and basic commands. He is a very social and outgoing guy and enjoys the park, meeting new people and making dog friends. He also rides very well in the car and is willing and eager to travel.

Good with Children: There are no children in the household, but he has been around them on leash and done well. He is a big guy and very enthusiastic so he would likely do better in a home with school age kids or older.

Good with Dogs: Archer does well around dogs. He is learning his doggy social skills and will play for a few minutes but he is not overtly excited about other dogs. He was just recently neutered, and with some male dogs he has showed some dominant behavior, but it goes away. There is another dog in the household that is a male and they get along well.

Good with Cats: There are no cats in the house, but he has been exposed. He is very prey driven and likes to chase them, but it does not seem like malintent.

House trained: He is responding well, but still has occasional accidents.

Crate trained: Archer is fearful of the crate, but with positive reinforcement he is improving. He will now go into the crate willingly for treats and his food. He sleeps in the crate also.

Leash trained: Archer is very strong and in excellent shape so he tends to pull on the leash when outside. He walks better with a gentle leader

Activity Level:  Very energetic and playful, he can run laps around the yard for hours. He really likes going running and going for long walks.

Fence Needed: Archer needs a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. He would be happier in household with a sturdy fence that is 5ft or higher.  He loves to check the fence perimeters, point at birds and chase squirrels. He has tried to climb my 4ft fence on multiple occasions to go after squirrels.

Behavior:  Don’t tell Archer  he isn’t a lap dog! He is very affectionate and loves to cuddle. He is truly a sweetheart and you will never feel lonely with him around.  He follows you around the house and is learning to play with dog toys. He sleeps well.  Will use a dog bed, but would prefer to be on the people bed at the top.  He can curl up pretty small.

Medical History: He is up to date on vaccines including Rabies and Influenza. He has had a heartworm test and he is on heartworm prevention. For his anxiety, I just got him an herbal supplement to start based on a traditional Chinese medicine exam and will do acupuncture this week too.  He is a classic case of Phlegm Fire Upwards (I know it sounds like voodoo)  and I am hopeful we will get his mind settled so he can be successfully placed.

Foster Comments: Archer has a huge personality and a heart for adventure!  He truly is a very handsome and unique dog. He is in fantastic shape and it is such a pleasure to watch him run and play and point at birds. He is very squirrely and birdy and would really enjoy learning to hunt or even doing agility. There are big nose prints on all my windows, as he loves watching the birds.

Archer requires a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. He would really enjoy an active family that would take him hiking or running and have a large fence for him to run laps in. As of right now, he is not the type of dog that can be let off the leash. He has not had any formal training and needs a human that is experienced with dogs that can provide patience and consistency. He would not thrive as well in a household if left unattended or alone for long periods of time. That being said, he is a very affectionate and overall happy dog that will certainly bring a lot of joy and entertainment to his forever home!

Archer has some anxiety and hyperactivity issues.  At this moment, I do not think he is adoptable to a normal family.  He is getting better.  The hyperactivity is running.  For hours as fast as he can.  If we bring him in, he'll go window to window watching for birds.  He has started playing with the other dogs and toys.  That's new.  He will sometimes be very anxious outside and climb on the door if a person is not outside.   Other times he does fine.  He has started laying down outside and resting.
