DENHAM (aka DAMON) ABIN#19-152 – M, 4 Years

Denham (aka Damon) ABIN#19- 152 – M, 4 Years

Foster dog name:  DENHAM (aka DAMON)

Gender: Male

Age: 4 years

Size/Weight: 55 lbs and working on losing some!

Color: Orange and White

Breed: English Setter

Good with Children: Denham would be best in a calm and more quiet household. He is happiest in that type of environment, so that would determine the type of children he would be best with

Good with Dogs: Yes, with more calm dogs.  Doesn’t do well with energetic or super alpha dogs. They upset him and he will growl and snap at them. With calmer dogs, he is a dream. He does fine with the resident female dog and resident smaller male dog.

Good with Cats: unknown, his foster mom will cat test him, if needed

House trained: Getting There! In transitioning to his foster home, Denham has some accidents if left without a potty break for too long. He is becoming more consistent in holding from morning until his mid-day break 🙂

Crate trained: Yes.

Leash trained: He does circle around a bit and pulls somewhat in his excitement for walks. While he did suffer two broken ankles that healed on their own before being rescued, he loves walks!

Activity Level: Relatively Low energy requirements. Two 30 min walks daily and yard rambling would more than satisfy Denham’s energy requirements. He loves snoozing. He has his favorite chair to snooze in and would love to snooze on the couch with his people.

Fence: A fence is preferred, but with his activity level, he would be fine with several walks a day and potty breaks on leash.   He should not be let off leash.

Training/Behavior:  Denham is very sweet and good natured (unless in a disruptive and/or noisy environment). He loves his foster mom and loves attention. He is always smiling and loves to have belly rubs. He knows sit and is responsive to his name. He has lovely behavior when in a calm and quiet home environment. He does jump up now and then, but is working on stopping that.

Medical History: Denham is neutered and up to date on shots. He is microchipped, on heartworm, flea and tick preventative.  He arrived with an ear infection, which has been treated. Regular ear cleaning should be followed as his ears are prone to getting dirty.

Both of his front ankles had been broken at one time and healed on their own before being rescued. As a result, one of the ankles does not bend. He does have some difficulty with stairs and a home with fewer (or no) stairs would be preferred. He has had an  Xray on 9/24/19 and the vet advised that surgery on either ankle would only open up a can of worms. One ankle actually appears to have been crushed at one time, in addition to being broken. He has started supplements (Synoquin and Move Flex) to assist with mobility and discomfort. He is also working on losing 5 lbs.  His forever home would be one that can maintain this type of care for him (roughly $55.00/month for the supplements).

Denham originates from Turkey where Leishmaniasis is endemic. He tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150.

Foster Comments:

Denham is a very sweet and very loving boy who is looking for a gentle and quiet home. He loves people and being with his people. At night he sleeps on a dog bed on the floor in his foster mom’s bedroom. During the day he has several dog beds, but will also lie on the floor just to be near his mom. He loves food (he is a chubby boy, working on losing weight), so make sure food is at the back of the kitchen counter where his snout can’t reach!

He is very happy with a low-key lifestyle, hunting in the grassy yard for bugs and other critters, going for walks, hanging out with his people, going for car rides (he needs to be helped in because of his ankles)

He is quite tolerant of having his nails trimmed, ears cleaned and being bathed in the tub (you do have to lift him in and out because of his ankles)

Denham is a talker, too! He makes funny little noises and “roooos” when it is meal time. He loves breakfast and dinner time!

As he becomes more comfortable in his foster home, he is becoming a bit of a mischief maker. He attempts to pull blankets and towels from open shelves. Recently he pulled down an unopened roll of paper towel and he and his foster sister took great joy in welcoming mom home with paper towel all up and down the hallway 🙂 Foster mom now knows to make sure these types of things are up and out of reach.

He enjoys nylabones and antler horn, but isn't a crazy chewer. He is also a slobbery drinker 🙂

Denham’s foster mom suspects he had a rough start in life, yet he is so sweet and loving and happy with his mom. His foster mom is going to miss him dearly.
