Foster Profile: Meet Bentley, a.k.a. Bentley Bug! He is the handsomest, fluffiest setter ever to exist (I might be biased, but he is pretty special). He is a cuddles connoisseur, has an affinity for belly rubs, and just reaaally wants to be someone’s best friend. He is only 2 years old and is a classic setter - an old soul with a bit of spice. His favorite thing to do is come up in front of his person, sit, pant for a few seconds, and then fall over on his back…I dare you to resist giving him belly rubs!

One of his favorite things to do is hang out at the coffee shop while I’m working on things - we sit outside and he curls up at my feet and watches everyone go by. There are a few pets demanded of course, and some of his belly rubs, but otherwise he is so calm and behaves like a pro.

Dogs: Mr. Ben is very well-mannered and gets along great with other dogs. He is a bit intimidated by dominate dogs and will “tuck and run” when cornered, but is not aggressive and has only ever gently growled (while being harassed by a very hyper terrier, so understandable). What an angel!

Cats: He also gets along well with cats - preferably those with claws. He is intrigued by them, but has chosen to keep a 10-foot buffer between himself and any cat after getting batted in the face by my kitty. There is certainly the potential for him to be BFFs with a cat, but at the very least he can coexist with them.

Training: Bentley knows his basic obedience (sit, come, stay, etc.), although he could use a bit more training to improve his response time. He also knows how to walk on a leash and is working on not being as intrigued by smells - a tough job for a setter - and the pulling that goes with his curiosity. Once he has mastered that, he will be a breeze to walk, run, or hike with. Another thing to note is that Bentley is a bit of a nervous pup at first - when he’s settling in, loud noises like garbage trucks and scary neighbor dogs will make him cower and occasionally bark, but as he gets used to his environment this improves completely.

Kids: He is good with kids, although he would do best in a home where the children are already experienced with dogs. He is as sweet as can be, but is entirely unaware of his size and barrel-shaped body, so may be intimidating to small children. He is extremely cuddly and loving though, so it really just depends on the home.

Activity & Energy: Mr. Bentley is a moderate-low activity level dog, which is rare for a 2-year old! He prefers to lounge around the house, but will also gladly run around the yard, point at the birds, and sniff at the wind. He is lovely inside and curls up on the couch or on his dog bed to people-watch. Of course, as with all dogs who are definitely not lap dogs, he thinks he is meant to be cuddled like a baby. While he isn’t pushy about it, be warned that his cute little puppy eyes are very hard to resist. Bentley would do well in a variety of households, including an apartment with someone who is active and willing to walk him.

Crate Training: Crates are Ben’s friend! He is very comfortable in his kennel and will gladly sleep in it, eat in it, hide in it, or bring all his toys in it. He doesn’t have any accidents in the crate and would be most confident in his new home if a kennel was available for him.

House Training: Ben is house-trained, and has had no accidents in his new foster home. He is a very clean dog and loves to keep his space (so the whole house) as neat as possible. I do take his water up at night or, if he drinks, I let him out one last time late so he can potty.

Medical History: Ben is neutered, UTD on shots, tested negative for Heartworms, and is on Heartworm preventative. He had a bit of an ear infection and some skin problems from being outside for so long, but he is feeling much better now after finishing his medication.

Fences: Ben has been in a yard with a wooden fence and a chain link fence - no issues with climbing either. He will try to follow you out gates though!
