Socialization/training:  Agathi is more often referred to as Aggie. She was extremely shy when she first came to her foster family. As her confidence and physical condition improved, Aggie was able to trust her foster parents more, so she would allow petting, handling and walking daily with the pack. She comes when called, is gentle taking treats, waits her turn for a treat, eats slowly, does not resource guard and is a very sweet dog. Aggie allows her nails to be trimmed and burrs/mats to be removed but can be a bit fearful if the skin is being pulled. She is unsure how much it might hurt. 

Good with Children: Yes.  Aggie greets people and likes children. If they are quite loud or very active in smaller spaces, Aggie will likely hold back and observe as she is not always comfortable with very busy situations. 

Good with Dogs: yes

Good with Cats: Most likely would be okay with cats.  She shows no real interest in the barn cats.

House trained: Yes, uses the dog door consistently.

Crate trained: Yes, but Agathi is not a danger to herself when left free in the house when her people are away. We do not crate her. 

Leash trained: Aggie has gained leash skills and walks well on a leash. When she becomes tangled, she may drop to the ground as she is unsure of what to do. 

Activity Level: Moderate.  Agathi has learned to play with a variety of dogs in her foster home. She loves to run in the yard, chase and be chased by her dog friends. When inside, Aggie likes to snuggle with her people and get a belly rub. She chews bones, plays with toys and naps in a dog bed or on the furniture. 

Fence: Aggie has a physical fence at her foster home. With patience and proper training, it may be possible for her to be in a yard with IV.  

Behavior: Agathi follows the house rules, rides well in the truck, sleeps in her foster parent’s bedroom, sometimes sleeps in her foster parent’s bed, gets excited about the daily pack walk. She is a very sweet and biddable dog. Aggie is very interested in birds and could be an excellent hunting companion, with training. 

Medical History: Up to date on vaccines, Spayed, Microchipped, No significant medical history. Aggie is from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She has tested negative, but the parasite that is transmitted by sandflies can remain dormant in the system.  Potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years.  Your vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab.  The test typically costs $120-150 but varies from vet to vet.

Foster Comments: Agathi is a very sweet, smart, gentle and submissive dog who loves people. She can amuse herself, has not been destructive, has built her confidence and trust in humans and gets along with other dogs very well. Aggie is quite athletic, loves to run and is a joy to watch her explore her world. When Aggie walks, it often appears that she is hinged in the middle. Her tail moves so quickly she reminds us of a slinky toy! She is a champion cuddler and loves to slide into bed with us so her head is on a pillow. With support she tends to overcome her shyness quickly. She is typically a quiet dog who does not bark unless there is a purpose for it.  Her coloring is gorgeous, and she has begun to like being groomed. 

Aggie would love being with her own family. Her sweet temperament and manners allow her to be a good fit for a retired couple, family with children, a hunting home, a hiking or camping companion.

Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000 mile distance between adopters & foster home. Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000 mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000 mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far West states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions.
