Size/Weight: Medium to large (52 1/2 lb) She is not fat, just a big boned girl!

Breed:  English Setter

Socialization/training:  Abby is an owner surrender and well socialized. She knows “sit”, but foster home has not yet tried other commands with her

Good with Children:  According to owners, she is good with children. Her foster mom’s observations of her interaction with children while on walks has been positive.

Good with Dogs:  Abby has been awesome with the resident dogs. She has been learning to play with them and engage with them. When the resident “mean” girl is being mean, Abby just ignores her and gently wags her tail.

Good with Cats:  Unknown, but probably with proper introductions

House trained:  Abby does signal (whines and goes to door) when she needs to go out. She had an accident initially . She has also pooped in the house when her foster mom is at work. Foster mom attributes this to slight separation anxiety and has put out puppy pads where Abby tends to poop.

Crate trained:  Yes she will settle into her crate nicely (especially when given a cookie)! Sometimes she goes in on her own.

Leash trained:  Abby LOVES walks and car rides. She does pull on her harness, but with more walks is becoming better at not pulling. She does not do that "all out setter drag you down the sidewalk" routine, though.

Activity Level: Abby is mid level. Abby’s foster mom feels that 7 years old is the “perfect” setter energy! Still playful and running around the yard and wanting to go for walks, but not over the top.

Fence: Abby would be okay without a fenced yard, as long as she gets her walks in! She does enjoy playing chase in the fenced yard with her foster sibling Sadie. She also enjoys sniffing in the yard.

Behavior:   Abby is just a dream setter. She is such a sweet and loving girl. She would be fine as an only dog or with another dog to play with and curl up with. She loves people and her person. Aside from the pooping in the house (and her poops tend to be on the small side), her behaviors are lovely. No counter surfing, no destructiveness, no jumping up on people, no excessive barking (except when foster mom gets home or when trying to engage others in play). She is sweet, silly, playful and an all around lovely girl! She does duck her head when foster mom goes to pet her or reach for her collar. Sometimes she is reluctant to come in from outside and that generally means she is enjoying herself outside or hasn’t finished pottying.

Medical History:  Up to date on vaccines, preventatives and spayed. Vet visit on 1/3/2020 went well and all checked out well. Mild arthritis just beginning in right Elbow. Overall she is a very healthy girl and did really well with the vet and staff.

Foster Comments:  Abby is an owner surrender when her senior owners had to relocate without her. She was kept kenneled outside during the Summer months and crated inside during the Winter months. She loves being a house dog!

Her foster mom loves her dearly and would love to adopt her herself, but knows Abby deserves a better home. Abby would love to have her person around more often than not. She was used to having her people all of the time and is currently in a home where her foster mom works full-time, but does get home mid-day to let her out. She didn’t seem to really know how to play when she arrived in her foster home, nor what treats were. She now engages foster sister Sadie in play, pounces on nylabones and sits for her peanut butter dog cookies!

She loves walks and has good endurance. She sits when being harnessed. She loves car rides and wants to be the co-pilot in the passenger seat when riding in a car. She can be trusted loose in the home when no one is at home, sleeps on a dog bed on the floor next to her foster mom’s bed and is learning about couches, although does not get up on the couch uninvited. She enjoys laying at her foster mom’s feet. She is not used to being brushed and will cringe and wiggle when being brushed. She has the most glorious soft curly coat and perpetual bedhead!

She has demonstrated no aggression whatsoever, takes her time eating her meals and sometimes does her happy dance at meal times. Because she is taller and deep chested, a raised water and food bowl would be good for her.

Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000 mile distance between adopters & foster home. Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000 mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000 mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far West states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions.
