RADAR AB#17-184

Gender: Male
Age: 10 weeks old, actual birthdate is 10/26/17
Size/Weight: 13 pounds, small in size but still growing as he’s a puppy
Color: white with tan spots and tan ears. Gorgeous deep blue eyes!
Breed: English setter

Socialization: A typical puppy! Needs training but loves to be held and cuddled.

Good with Children: A sweetheart but he has sharp puppy teeth and claws.

Good with Dogs: Yes! Very playful! Radar wants to play all day long and can hold his own against slightly bigger puppies. He is GREAT with all dogs and we’d love to see him go to a family with another playful dog! He loves everyone!

Good with Cats: He’s not sure what to make of the resident cats and backs away when he get swatted or hissed at. Young enough that he should be able to be trained to leave them alone.

House trained: No, it’s been anywhere from negative 38 to 10 degrees here in the Midwest with snow and ice on the ground so we haven’t even tried.

Crate trained: Yes, sleeps in a crate but definitely wants to be out in the company of people. He starts to howl as soon as he wakes up as he’s ready to start the day. We would prefer he go to a family where he’s not crated all day.

Leash trained: Too young, wants to chew the leash.

Activity Level: Active- Plays hard and then crashes on the floor and goes to sleep. Wakes up, plays hard, and then crashes on the floor to go to sleep…wakes up, plays hard….repeat…repeat…repeat

Fence REQUIRED: A physical or invisible fence  are required due to his vision issues-see foster comments.

Behavior: Radar loves attention! He snuggles up to us and loves to be held. He’s also very playful and can entertain himself with his favorite chew toys. He doesn’t bark unless he’s trying to get his foster brothers to play with him or get out of his kennel. He’s curious about everything and learned quickly where the treats are stored. Despite his limited vision, he’s fearless! He went up and down the stairs without much effort for the first time recently. Nothing stops him!

Medical History: Radar has had first & second set of puppy shots, is microchipped and on heartworm, flea and tick preventative. He’s too young for his neuter surgery. The adoption contract will state adopter must neuter by 9 mths of age. We will reimburse what "Friends of Animals" allow, which is $74.00.

Radar is recovering from double ear infections, a urinary tract infection and a staph infection and hookworms. He’s feeling much better after receiving treatment.

Foster Comments: Radar was relinquished to A & B at 9 weeks of age without even being given a name. The breeder believed he had some sight issues and didn’t want to sell him without perfect vision. My vet treated Radar immediately for his hookworms, ear, staph, and urinary tract infections but didn’t detect anything unusual with his eyes. His eyes appear normal but my vet thinks if it is a problem with his retinas, it could get worse over time and he could lose more of his sight. This is just his opinion. The only time we realize he has some vision loss is when we try to give him treats, he can’t seem to find it in our hands and relies on his little nose to get it into his mouth. We have a plastic tube with a ball that goes around it for our cats to play with and he isn’t able to track the ball as it goes around the circle.

At this time, Radar doesn’t run into things and can see himself in the reflection in our fireplace. He comes running to us when called and doesn’t bump into things. He’s able to do stairs and runs and plays happily. It’s close-up when he struggles slightly. Lately he’s also been unhappy in his crate at night, we think he’s scared because he can’t see that well in the semi-darkness so we leave a light on for him.

Radar is a wonderful puppy! He’s super sweet, very playful and extremely good natured. He doesn’t let his lack of near vision hold him back in any way. He wants to play and then be snuggled. Since we don’t know how his vision will progress in the future, it might be best that he go to a open floor plan home that doesn’t have a lot of furniture or clutter in their house to trip him and is willing to make adjustments if need be.

A backyard that’s more clear without a lot of trees, shrubs, and lawn ornaments might be helpful for him although he can see large objects now and doesn’t run into things. He’s doing great in our home and not bumping into anything, however, we don’t know if that will always be the case. NOTHING slows him down and his vision isn’t an issue for him now. I think another dog in the house would be good for Radar to keep him company and to show him the ropes. If you want a buddy to bond to you, snuggle in your lap and make you laugh, then Radar is your guy.

Radar is a fabulous dog with his sweet temperament, adorable looks, outstanding personality, friendly nature, cuddle-bug tendencies, please don’t let his sight challenges stop you from applying for this perfect puppy!
