GEORGY AB#17-163

Gender: Male
Age: 3 years (approx. DOB 10/1/2014)
Weight: 36 lbs
Color: Charcoal & White
Breed: English Setter

Good with Children: There are no children in Georgy’s foster home, but he is a pretty gentle guy. I think he would do very well with children who are old enough to be respectful of him. Really young or loud & rambunctious children might make him nervous.

Good with Dogs:  Yes, Georgy generally gets along well with other dogs, although he doesn’t particularly care for ones that are persistently in his face when he isn’t in the mood to play. He has done very well with the two other fosters setters in his home (Lucy and Monkey) as well as resident setters Sara, Noelle, Luna and Disco. He tends to take a little while to warm up to new dogs before he is ready to engage and play with them, but once he gets comfortable, he is happy to play chase in the yard or wrestle for stick. One important note: when Georgy first arrived, he was emaciated, so he tends to be very protective of his food. I always feed him in his crate as he gets very upset if another dog comes too close while he is eating.

Good with Cats: Unknown, but Georgy does seem to have a fairly strong prey drive, so I would exercise caution if introducing him to a cat.

House trained: Yes - When he first arrived, Georgy had never been in a house before and didn’t understand the concept, but he learned very quickly and hasn’t had an accident in quite a while.

Crate trained: Georgy will go into the crate to eat or for a treat, but he really isn’t a fan of it. He is much more comfortable curling up on the corner of the couch. He is desperate for human attention and does not like being separated from his people. He has never done anything destructive, but he does cry if left alone for long periods of time.

Leash trained: Georgy is ok on leash, but there is a very large yard in his foster home, so we do not practice leash walking a lot.

Activity Level: Medium/High. Georgy fits the typical Setter mold – when outside he loves to run around the yard and chase birds. When inside, he is generally quite mellow and is very content to curl up next to his person for a good cuddle. As long as he has a human to be close to, he is calm and relaxes inside.

Fence: Strongly Preferred. Georgy has shown that he can jump quite high and climb a chain link fence so a 5” or higher privacy fence or invisible fence would be best.

Training/Behavior: Georgy came from the island of Santorini in Greece. The woman who runs the shelter that brought him to us thinks that he was a lost or abandoned hunting dog. Whatever he was before, it was clear as soon as he arrived that he had never lived in a home before – every day sounds like the television or hair dryer had him hiding under the table. He has become more accustomed to these things now, and isn’t as afraid. Given his background, he hasn’t had much training on being a good house dog, but aside from counter surfing, he really is very well behaved. He does also jump up on you to get attention and be close to you, but he is quite light and gentle when he does it.

Medical History: Georgy is healthy, neutered, up to date on all appropriate vaccinations & microchipped. He is also current on Flea/Tick and Heartworm prevention. Georgy did have tapeworms, but has been treated and they will be gone by the time he is adopted. Georgy also had some really bad tartar build-up on his teeth, so his foster mom gave him the gift of a dental at the beginning of Dec, and he now has nice pearly whites. Although Georgy is still slim, he has been eating well and is no longer as skeletal as he was when he first arrived, but he could stand to gain a few more pounds.
*Georgy originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. He tested negative for Leishmaniasis before coming to the US, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to having him tested annually for the next 7 years.

Foster Comments: If you are looking for a constant companion to share your days and nights with, then Georgy is the guy for you!! He absolutely loves attention and affection, and he is a world class cuddler. He wants to be with his people all the time and when indoors, likes to be touching you. Even outside, he will check in often and come looking for you if he doesn’t see you. He can be active and would be happy to go on hikes and adventures, but Georgy also loves to snuggle up beside you on the couch and would really like to go to bed with his people at night. Georgy is accustomed to having furniture privileges in his foster home, and he WILL NOT be adopted to a home where he is not welcome on the furniture with his people.

This boy is sweet, loving, gentle and calm. If I didn’t have a full house with 6 resident setters (one of whom really isn’t a fan of other dogs), I would keep him myself.
