GRACIE & JADE AB#17-148

May consider separate adoptions.

Gender:  Both Female
Age:  Both 7.5 years
Weight:   Gracie 46 lbs., Jade 43 lbs.
Color:  Gracie is white & orange, Jade white & black
Breed:  AKC English Setter littermates

Socialization/training:  Basic commands.

Good with Children:  Yes. The dogs are good with the kids in their foster home. Both sat calmly when rushed and hugged by young neighbor kids. They like to lay on the bed in the teenager’s room.

Good with Dogs:  Yes. They have done well with the resident dogs in their foster home and after the initial bark-up, were playful with the neighbor puppy.

Good with Cats: While they have lived with cats before and probably won’t hurt cats, they are heavy-duty annoying around the two cats in the foster home. They bark and chase the cats, who have now decided to move into the basement during the day. They could use an encounter with a tough, claws-intact cat and would probably be okay in the home with a cat who stands-her-ground. But otherwise, not recommended.

House-trained:  Yes. They are both generally house-broken. There have been a few accidents when not taken out regularly. Might be good candidates for a dog door!

Crate trained:  Yes. They will go in pretty easily (especially for a treat) and like to be crated together in a large crate. They are quiet until someone gets home! They weren’t fond of being crated at night and we’ve let them have free roam of the master bedroom with no issues.

Leash trained: Yes. Gracie is especially a good walker. Jade walks nicely but when she sees a critter, hang on.

Activity Level:  Low-to-medium. They are nice, middle-aged dogs who don’t chew. They play with a tennis ball (especially Gracie), but are relatively low-key inside.

Fence:   This is tricky business. They are trained on an electric-fence and picked it up quickly at their foster home. Gracie does great and respects the boundaries. Jade figured out in one day that if she jumped the garden fence, she was over the zap zone. Would she safely stay in an electric fence that didn’t have a spot to jump? We don’t know. They are also fence-climbers and went over an 8’, yes EIGHT FOOT fence. Their original home, installed an electric fence within the physical fence boundary.
We think that the safest situation to keep them safely contained would be a 6’ privacy fence that is not climbable or a dual-fence situation as described. They walk quickly over a chain-link fence. Gracie and Jade will come with two shock collars and an electric fence transmitter, so only the cost of wire (and a little shovel work!) would be required to get them set up on an electric fence. Jade may never be able to be trusted loose in any type of fenced yard.

Behavior:  The two sisters have very different personalities! Gracie is happy-go-lucky and very playful. Jade is more reserved and seems like the brains of the operation. They both are very nice, sweet dogs.

Medical History:  Grace & Jade came with all their vet records, from birth on! They are fully vetted, spayed, microchipped, and on Heartworm and flea/tick preventative. They come with AKC paperwork, including a fascinating family tree and photos of their parents. At their recent physicals, both were found to be healthy. Jade takes half a generic version of Proin chewable tablet with her food, which controls a bladder issue. The cost seems to be about $16 for a two-month supply or $8 a month. She takes it easy with food or by hand—no challenges getting her to ingest it like some dogs.

Foster Comments: Gracie & Jade came from a loving home. Their owner had a terminal illness and asked Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue to help find a home for the bonded pair where they could stay together. Their previous owner recently passed away and we would like to respect her wishes to keep them together, but will also consider separate adoptions. Being experienced in fostering and rehoming dogs, we find that dogs will adjust.

It is fascinating to watch them interact; they are definitely a bonded pair! Even with two, they feel like less work than a more hyper single dog! They are easy-going and happy. The only challenge is that when one barks, the other barks, and then the first one keeps barking because the second one is barking, so obviously there must be something to bark at! They are fun to watch interact, like how Gracie waits for Jade when they going down the deck stairs to the yard.

Discounted adoption fee: $225.00 for the pair
