Foster dog name: Minnie
Gender: Female
Age: 5 years old
Size/Weight: small/33 pounds/Skinny Minnie
Color: White & black
Breed: English Setter

Good with Children: Yes, older Children

Good with Dogs: Yes, ok with other dogs though can be timid on first meeting-hit the ground upon first meeting my 4 year old gentle Brittany. She quickly realized he was a safe friend to run with. Minnie is frequently licking my 2 dogs, 1 male and 1 senior female.

Good with Cats: No, very prey driven

House trained: Yes
Crate trained: Yes
Leash trained: Fair

Training: She is smart, learned the doggie door on her own even and knew to come in out of the rain, knows her name, will sit on command and understands the meaning of “no.”

Behavior: Independent and friendly to people & dogs

Activity Level: Very Active. She NEEDS to be exercised often or she will or could be quite destructive. She is not left crated during the day for more than 4 hours.

Fence REQUIRED: Fence and prefer 5 feet or taller as Minnie is always jumping at the fence to see what is beyond it. She may go over a shorter fence though she has not tried to escape at all.

Medical History: Up to date on vaccines, spayed, micro chipped, on heartworm preventative.

Foster Comments: Minnie is as sweet as a dog can be and yet be independent. Her tail is always wagging. She loves being petted, then off to play. After enough exercise she is happy to relax in the house playing with toys and bones in a nondestructive manner. She goes from toy to toy to bone to toy pulling everything out of the toy box.
The key phrase is "after enough exercise"...Minnie needs to have a lot of outdoor time to smell, explore, hunt critters. Once that is out of her system, she's a loving & happy girl inside. Then she NEEDS some more outdoor time. She would probably be a good candidate as a jogging partner. With enough exercise she is good in the house with toys to entertain her.

If she is not checked on in the backyard for any length of time she will dig holes or possibly dig out. Because I am able to check on her regularly, this behavior is at a minimum.

Because of her high energy, a doggie playmate would be an asset to keep her entertained and tire her out.

Minnie loves food even though she burns it off as fast as she eats it. She will need a lot of extra food to keep her from being too underweight. I am working diligently on trying to add some weight to skinny Minnie. She also has a soft mouth-takes treats gently.

For a small dog she has a big dog bark aka as a watch dog. Curious, does not seem afraid of new things, explored the whole house, ran and checked out each room immediately upon arrival.

The biggest challenge with Minnie is she has a very high activity level, during the day she would rather spend all day in yard hunting and searching than spend time with people. When inside she is frequently looking out the window. When birds come on the tv, Minnie is right there watching them fly. She does not always come when called. I must offer treats to get her back into the house. Luckily Minnie will settle down in the evening and entertain herself with mass quantities of toys.

If you have a dog that needs a playmate, or you need a hiking buddy, Minnie may be the dog for you!
