Foster Comments: Rosco is a sweet, loving, and EXTREMELY active young setter. We have had several setters over the years, and I think he takes first place for activity! He absolutely requires a good sized fenced in yard so that he can burn off all of the energy he has. He is still very much a puppy. He loves to run in the yard, pointing and then chasing butterflies and bugs. He also keys on birds, and follows them as they fly over the yard area. We have fired guns in his vicinity and he isn’t gun shy; with training he would probably make a good hunting dog.

Rosco is a registerable English Setter, and was originally a breeder surrender to a program at the Nebraska state prison in June of this year. The breeder wanted a Field Trial dog, and didn’t think Rosco had what he wanted. Rosco went thru a 9 week obedience training program at the prison and he also has his AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate. After completion of his training program, he was adopted out to a family with 2 small children. Although the family loved Rosco, and their kids adored him, his activity level was simply too high for them, and they did the right thing and surrendered him to A&B English Setter Rescue.

He is very gentle with children, and with his foster mom and dad. It took him a few days to warm up to us, but now he likes to climb up into foster dad’s lap and take a nap. He also cuddles on the couch each evening with his foster mom and foster sister Lyla, before going to bed in his crate. He would love to sleep in the bedroom with his people, but there are just too many dogs in this household for that. Rosco knows several commands, and has good house manners. He has not learned the use of the doggie door; he doesn’t seem to like the feel of the flaps on his back as he goes through it. He will go to the door when he needs to go outside.

After an afternoon nap, he is back out in the yard, running and chasing butterflies and bugs again until supper time. We have been feeding him in his crate as he is getting extra rations in an attempt to put a few pounds on him. He loves chewing on antlers, nylabones, and rope toys. Stuffed toys aren’t good for him, as they are quickly destroyed. He also loves playing ball, with a tennis ball or a larger squeaky ball that we have. Unfortunately, the ball landed in a potted plant on the deck once or twice, and he had so much fun trying to dig it out he decided to try that again (with help from foster sister Lyla). We finally just removed all of the temptations from the deck. Ah, puppies!

Rosco’s foster dad would love to keep him, but we already have six setters, so it would be better for Rosco to go to a home that can give him plenty of attention. I think he would be fine as an only dog, or would do well with an active doggie sibling. He and his foster sister, Lyla, play together very well and enjoy each other’s company. And, even though he rarely gives doggie kisses, he does give hugs!
