HARVEY AB#17-117

Gender: Male
Age: 9 months
Size/Weight: Medium/42 lbs.
Color: White and Black, with rich ticking.
Breed: English Setter/Border Collie Mix

Socialization/training: Harvey is a friendly soul, and a quick student, well-behaved in the house, car, neighborhood and park. He responds to his name and key commands, understands “come,” “sit,” “down,” “wait,” “up,” and “off,” loves to “fetch” indoors or out, and will “drop it” automatically or on command. He can handle doggie day care, but responds best to home routine and family. He’s an excellent candidate for Obedience training. Harvey loves to learn and wants to please!

Good with Children: Harvey hasn’t spent much time with young children; just met them on walks. He is friendly to all ages, but exhibits herding behavior when he plays, so would be safest around older children.

Good with Dogs: Yes. Harvey loves to play and makes friends quickly. He can be too playful for older dogs, as well as tiny “yipper” types.

Good with Cats: Seems to be. Has tried to play with neighbor kitties, with no luck.

House trained: Yes. He’s fine once diet, routine, and potty location are set.

Crate trained: Yes. He uses his open crate as a den, taking his toys in and out, but doesn’t want the door locked and will protest briefly if left alone, eventually settling down. He’s earned first floor roaming rights and is only crated during human mealtimes.

Leash trained: Yes, and will improve with Obedience training. We use a retractable leash for morning/evening business, a 6 foot leash for jogs, neighborhood walks, or visiting friends.

Activity Level: Medium High. Harvey is a healthy youngster who loves to romp and play.

Fence: A big fenced yard is always preferred but other training options will be considered, such as Invisible Fencing, or an established hiking habit. Leashed walks and modest yards will never be enough for him. Harvey is smart and adaptable, happiest running free, young and trainable. His new family should seek to continue expanding his recall skills while keeping him safe from cars.

Behavior: Harvey’s a sweet, lovable boy; a world class snuggler. He’s relaxed indoors, with occasional play breaks, entertaining himself with squeaky toys, bones, and tennis balls. He will invite play by nudging one of these onto your lap, sometimes adding 3 or 4 more in hopes the right bait will engage you. (Cave in just once to that cute face, and you’ll be icing your throwing arm and wondering how your movie ended.) He’s calm but attentive, shadowing as we switch rooms, alert for invitations to cuddle, especially on the furniture. He regularly tests No-Dog zones to see what he can get away with, with a range of pseudo-meek expressions. He’ll casually place a paw up on the couch; maybe 2. He will tiptoe into our bedroom, ears down, eyes averted as if nothing’s up, but retreats to the hall when told “no/out.” Sometimes he’ll combat crawl from the hallway a few inches at a time, then freeze when caught, as if to say, “I didn’t even get up, see?” If our kids get up to use the restroom and don’t close their doors, they’ll return to find him curled up in the exact spot they were sleeping in, pretending he was there all along. He is quite entertaining!

Generally he’s a very good boy. He can stay home by himself for extended periods, though we may find our undamaged shoes and boots in odd places. He can be a counter surfer, and has swiped lasagna, cheese, and a Cafe latte. He does needs to work on not jumping up, and is making good progress with consistent correction.

Medical History: Healthy, neutered, up to date on all vaccines & microchipped.

Foster Comments: This sweet pup landed in a crowded Texas shelter 250 miles from Houston at the close of Hurricane Harvey. His intake photo shows how scared and sad he was, but no one stepped up to claim or adopt “A225328” - so his days were numbered. A kind rescue samaritan finagled his release, and volunteers relayed him 1,400 miles to his A&B foster family. The transport drivers raved about this sweet, cuddly boy. “Harvey” has had a similar impact on every person he’s met since! He is a wonderful dog.

Harvey belongs with a family who will celebrate his happy heart, love and protect him, include him in daily life, and maintain his “there’s no place like home” attitude. He bonds strongly, comes running when called, and loves supervised outdoor adventures. Once trust and authority are established, Harvey will embrace his place in his new family and be a loyal, loving member for life!

He has a huge, healthy appetite for life, and is so happy running!
