DANNER AB#17-078

Gender: Male
Age: Approx 5 years
Weight: 55 pounds
Color: Orange Belton
Breed: English Setter

Socialization/training: We have been working with him. Knows “sit” and “no”. He is getting the hang of coming when called. Danner came in with some resource guarding issues. We have been working hard on that and he is doing much better.

Good with Children: Due to resource guarding, Danner would be best in a home with no  children. He also can be a bit rambunctious and may knock over little ones.

Good with Dogs: Yes, he does need to be fed separately. He will play well with another dog.  Sometimes however, he doesn’t understand when to leave another dog alone and can be a bit boisterous.

Good with Cats: Unknown, have not been able to cat test.

House trained: 99.9%. He will go to the door when he has to go out. He will hold it especially when there is bad weather. He does have to go out right away after he eats. That is where the .1% comes from. He has had the occasional accident if we don’t put him out as soon as he is finished eating.

Crate trained: Yes. He will settle down nicely when you leave. He also will go in and nap when he is tired. However, if you are home and lock him in  he will fuss and want to be out with you.

Leash trained: Yes, he pulls a little at first from being excited but settles down after being out.

Activity Level: Dan is pretty laid back. He will play with the other dogs and he can get a bit rough with them while wrestling. He loves sleeping on his bed or in his crate. When he first got here we thought he may have been a lost hunting dog as he honed in on our cockatiel, but he seems to have less interest in birds the longer we have him. While our other dogs are hunting anything they can find in the yard he is mostly looking for stuff to pee on.

Fence: I would say a solid fence would be what Danner needs. He does love leash walks but it may not be enough exercise. He also became extremely reactive to the noise from the electric fence collar our friends dog uses. He hid and shook so no e-collars or electric fence.

Danner is just finishing up with hearworm tratment and starting to be able to be let out in a fenced area. He is pretty mellow. He does his business then sniffs around and plays with the other dogs, then he is usually the first one in. He is however pretty athletic and if motivated he may not be contained by a low fence. There are some little behavior things that say he may have been in an outdoor kennel environment before. For example, if there is a baby gate or fence he weaves back and forth, and he prefers to go to the bathroom on the concrete instead of the grass.

Behavior: We are not sure of Danners past, so a lot is a mystery. He did seem to prefer men when he first came to us, but he now loves up on everyone who will pay attention to him. He wants nothing more than to be an oversized lap dog,  and always looking for attention. He will climb up in your lap but prefers not to be picked up. He loves back scratches and belly rubs. Danner has been learning to give “kisses” he doesn’t quite get the hang of it and will grab your nose in his enthusiasm. He is not biting, just mouths, no teeth.

He will follow you around the  house looking to see what you are doing always hoping that involves food. He will counter surf and if it’s close enough for him to grab he will. Breakfast and dinner are his 2 favorite times of the day. He puts on quite a show waiting for his food. His excitement and guarding issues over food most likely has to do with him being a stray wondering where his next meal will  come. He was very underweight when he came to us. He hates bad weather and needs to be dragged outside when it is raining or cold.

Medical History: Danner is up to date on vaccines, microchipped and will be neutered at the end of March.

Danner came in emaciated with whip worm, tape worm, cocci,  double ear infections and heartworm positive. All stuff that can and has been treated. No more whip or tape worms. He’s now at healthy weight with a good appetite. His ear infection did clear up, but we are monitoring as the vet said he must have had it for a long time and he actually had a perforated ear drum. We have not however, noticed any hearing loss on that side.

He has just completed heartworm treatment and will be going in for neutering before adoption.  Danner did have a couple of what we thought were tumors on his leg. They were removed with no complications and ended up not being tumors. They were cysts/calcifications  that were from heartworm larva. Thay are gone and Danner seems to be a healthy boy.

Foster Comments: Danner just wants someone to love and to be loved back. He can be a bit clingy with his humans, but we have not seen any separation anxiety issues happen when we are gone. I’m not sure how he would be when left alone if there are no other dogs in the house. He would be fine in a home with another dog or even two as long as the other dogs are ok with sharing their human and he is fed separate. This also follows with toys and bones. If he has it and he doesn’t want to give it up he will defend it with both other dogs and humans. We are working with him on these issues, Danner  knows he must sit before he gets his food bowl and no longer jumps all over you trying to get it out of your hand.  He is getting better about taking food from your hand, he is learning to “go easy” with treats and not grabbing your fingers.

So far he has not been destructive or torn anything up. He is extremely curious about everything and likes to investigate everything. He really wants to be right there with you and up close and personal on whatever it is you are doing. If you let him he will climb right up on you lap.
