Good with Cats: unknown

House trained: Yes. She has regular times she goes out and she will whine if she needs to go out. Getting her back inside can be a challenge until she acclimates to her new home

Crate trained: Yes. Lola’s crate is her safe space and she spends most of her time in her crate with the gate open. She crates with the gate closed when no one is at home to help her feel safer when she is alone. She also transports in her crate as she has not yet overcome her fears of unknown places and leash walking

Leash trained: no. Lola freaks out when on leash and has reactive snapped (not in aggression). She most resembles a wild horse when she feels the leash tension. She bucks and will alligator roll. Her foster mom is slowly working on her with this. Her foster mom must crawl into Lola’s crate to put a leash or harness on Lola. Lola will crowd into the back of her crate, but will permit handling without snapping or fighting.

Training: Lola was essentially a feral dog when she was taken into rescue. The biggest reward for her foster mom is seeing the trust in her eyes when she takes a dog cookie from her hand or when she comes to sniff her foster mom or relaxes when being stroked and pet.

Behavior: Lola is a beautiful girl and she has a very sweet temperament and desire to trust her people and surroundings. Lola is very timid and will take a lot of time and gentle work to overcome her timidity and ability to learn to trust is in her wiring. She needs someone who will let her go at her pace and who knows when to back off when she is becoming overwhelmed.

She flinches when touched, will crowd into the back of her crate when afraid, but will relax when touch becomes a nice feel to her vs something to be afraid of. She does come out of her crate and lie down near her foster mom when her foster mom quietly sits and reads in Lola’s presence. Lola does have a curious streak too. It helps her overcome her timidity to explore new parts of her foster mom’s house. This curious streak and gentle and sweet nature will be the keys to growth for Lola.

Fence REQUIRED: Lola MUST have a securely hard fenced and gated yard due to her being so timid. A higher fence level is preferred.

Medical History: Before coming to Above and Beyond, Lola had a litter of puppies. She was also brought up to date on vaccines and spayed. She will be ready to go to her forever home once she has successfully completed her treatment She is heartworm positive and is mid-way through her treatment now. She has been tolerating the heartworm treatment well.

Foster Comments: Lola is a very sweet girl. She is so very timid because of her not being socialized when she was younger. This her history as relayed by the rescue who took her in from MS:

“Lola had been living in a hog pen with no human interaction in rural Northern Mississippi. With food only being thrown over to her every so often. She then found herself pregnant, scared, and alone at an animal control in Mississippi that used Tasers on the kennel bars to keep the dogs quiet. That's when Wright-Way stepped in to rescue her. Lola went into a foster home to have her puppies but unfortunately her puppies were sickly and did not survive.

Lola arrived at WWR scared and afraid of human interaction. Over the last few months of being worked with some, Lola has improved a little. Unfortunately, we do not have the proper resources to fully help her become the amazing dog we know that she can be and are looking for someplace that has more resources and ability to work with her. “

Lola’s foster mom knows she has so much more growing to do and that she will take a very special forever home where she can continue to learn to trust. She may never be a dog her adopter can walk on leash or go for car rides with or snuggle on the couch with. The biggest step with Lola will be seeing the trust and love shining from her eyes and her confidence in small things such as coming in and out of her home, being touched without flinching and acclimating to daily household routines and sounds. She is a very sweet girl and a calm and quiet household would be best for her. She would be fine as an only dog, but having one other gentle dog may help her continue to learn and trust.
