Gender: Female
Age: 14.5 years
Size/Weight: 40 pounds, underweight but needs to be light on her feet as she has arthritis in her hips and elbows.
Color: mostly white with the cutest spot around her eye and freckles on her ears.
Breed: Eng Setter mix

Good with Children: Good with older children if they are gentle.

Good with Dogs: yes

Good with Cats: yes, she lived with cats and other animals in her previous home.

House trained: She has never pooped in the house but if she is not let out every few hours she tinkles inside occasionally.

Crate trained: She eats in her crate but otherwise likes to lay in the kitchen on the mat in front of the stove.

Leash trained: She pulls a little on a leash but settles down.

Behavior: Birdie is not a cuddlier but does like to be near you. She likes a good scratch behind the ears and follows you around to see what good treat you might have. She takes them very gently from your hand. She is not interested in toys but likes to chew on bully sticks, her favorite delicacy. She never barks but quietly whimpers occasionally if she wants something. I affectionately call her “Ma” because she checks up on all her pack mates to see what is happening. She very much seems like a wise old soul.

Activity Level: Low. She is surprisingly fast on her feet in short spurts but would rather lounge around with a person or people.

Fence: Leash walking would be sufficient. She needs to be leashed when outside or have a fence, but she cannot jump to get over a fence so a low one would be fine.

Medical History: Birdie is up to date on vaccines, spayed and microchipped. She was just in for an exam and the vet states her heart, lungs, kidneys and liver are all good! Birdie is also deaf. She takes only glucosamine and chondroitin and an occasional Deramaxx for her arthritis.

Foster Comments/Behavior: Birdie came from a sad situation where she was one of 6 dogs who was turned into a shelter by a family who “had too many dogs”.

She is deaf, but sees well and is starting to learn a couple of hand signals.
She is not toy or food aggressive so other more dominant dogs would be able to eat her food.
She can get up and down but needs a soft spot to rest her old bones.

Birdie needs someone with a kind gentle touch to spend her remaining years with, and other than her occasional piddles in the house she is a low maintenance sweet old dog who just needs some good food and a comfortable dog bed. She takes a few days to warm up to new people but she will warm her way into your heart if you let her. Please consider this sweet old girl.
