DAFNI ABIN#19- 155 – F, 1 Year

Gender: Female
Age: 1 year
Size/Weight: 34 lbs (could use a couple more pounds)

Color: Lemon Belton (white with very light orange spots)

Breed: English Setter

Good with Children: There are no children in Dafni’s foster home, but she is good with everyone, so I suspect she will be fine with children.  She is quite tender and a bit timid, so any children would need to be supervised to ensure they are gentle with her.

Good with Dogs: Yes, fantastic!  Dafni lives in a foster home with 8 other dogs, and she is excellent with all of them.  She loves to wrestle, chase and play “bitey face” with her siblings, but she is very gentle.  She is the smallest of the pack, so she is often getting rolled over by the others, but she just jumps back up and gets right back into things.  She is especially fond of her foster brother Sozo and follows Sara around as if she was her big sister.

Good with Cats: Unknown, but probably would be ok.  Dafni is very gentle and hasn’t demonstrated a strong prey drive.  I would always make introductions with caution, but I think Dafni could learn to coexist with cats.

House trained: Yes, Dafni does not have accidents in the house or in her crate.  She is let out into the yard very often, but she has potty trained very quickly.

Crate trained: Yes.  Dafni doesn’t love the crate and she would much prefer to be snuggled up on the couch or in bed with you, but she will go into the crate for a treat or a meal and she settles down well once inside.

Leash trained: We have a very large back yard, so we have not worked much on leash-walking, but Dafni likes to be with her people and doesn’t pull too hard.

Activity Level: Average.  Dafni is a typical young setter that loves to run and play, but she also settles down very nicely in the house and loves to cuddle with her person.  She is generally active outside and calm inside.

Fence: Strongly preferred.  Dafni loves to run and play freely, and she enjoys the freedom of a safely fenced yard to stretch her legs and play with her setter siblings.  When she runs, she is FAST and loves to race across the yard.

Training/Behavior: Dafni has not had a lot of training, but she is generally quite well behaved.  She has a naturally sweet temperament and is very sensitive and attentive to her people and wants to please.  She does still jump up on people to get attention and she always needs to be in the middle of any loving that is taking place.

Medical History: Dafni is healthy, UTD on all vaccinations, and is on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. She could gain a couple of pounds, but she is generally in good health and body condition.

Dafni originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She tested negative before coming to the USA and her lymph node biopsy was negative also, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years.  Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab.  The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but I pay ~$150 at my vet.  University vet hospitals tend to be less expensive.

 Foster Comments:
Dafni is a true sweetheart of a setter.  I think she had a hard life in Greece because she is a bit timid and is very afraid of loud voices and is a bit hand shy.  She is incredibly affectionate and wants love and attention, but a hand raised above her head makes her duck and back away.  If you reach out to her, she will come to you and when you start petting her, she leans in for more.  She absolutely loves to be petted and cuddled and quite happily snuggles up in your lap on the couch.  At only 34 pounds, she is a great size for a lap dog ☺

Dafni also adores the company of other dogs.  She loves to play and is happy to engage with any other dog that will play with her.  She likes to lick the snouts of her playmates and she tends to do that when meeting new dogs as well – some dogs may not appreciate that, so I would monitor new introductions carefully to keep her safe.  Dafni errs on the submissive side and will roll over and show her belly if she is nervous or others are more dominant.  Once she makes a friend, her excitement is infectious, and she is great at encouraging other dogs to play with her.  Dafni definitely needs to have another friendly dog in her forever home.

Dafni is a tender soul, and she needs a quieter, gentle home with a family that will give her lots of love and cuddles and help her feel safe.  She likes to be with her people, so I would prefer a home where she does not have to be home alone for many hours.  She is well behaved, so a home that could take her to work with them or a family that stays or works from home would be ideal.

My Greek setter Sozo is going to be very sad when she leaves, so I promised him she would go to the PERFECT home!
