International Rescue

A dog in desperate need of being rescued doesn’t know what country it’s in. It only knows the abuse and neglect and loneliness it has suffered.

Above and Beyond understands that our mission and efforts also know no geographic boundaries as we rescue dogs domestically and internationally. Since 2016, in collaboration with international rescue organizations, we have rescued hundreds of setters from Greece, Turkey, Serbia, and other European countries.

Working with international rescues allows Above and Beyond to expand its efforts to help more deserving dogs. We’re able to do that while still maintaining our work in the US.

We rescue international dogs because few of those countries have the same level of specific breed or general rescue organizations, humane societies and volunteers as we do in the US. Dogs abroad face unbearable conditions, especially Setters who are often abandoned when they are no longer able to hunt and are condemned to a life of misery.

Much of the rescue effort in those countries is done by individuals who provide as much support as they can with very limited resources. Those brave rescuers nurse the dogs back to health and rely on organizations like Above and Beyond to find safe and loving homes for the dogs.

Dogs that Above and Beyond imports go through a rigorous vetting process. They have all the required vaccines such as rabies and distemper, and blood tests for leishmania, that isn’t endemic in the US, as well as for all common tick and mosquito-borne illnesses. All of our international dogs require annual testing for leishmaniasis for seven years. You can learn more about this disease and diagnostics by clicking HERE

Each dog has an international pet passport listing all vaccines and medical treatments, and an international health certificate signed by a registered veterinarian confirming that they are healthy and do not pose a health risk to humans or other animals. Our dogs also meet all U.S. federal regulations for importation.

Our work, as always, focuses on the welfare and safety of dogs in need. It also is a way for us to enrich the lives of the adopters who open their hearts and homes to save dogs. Those who have adopted an international dog say the dogs are some of the most loving and affectionate they have ever seen. They say the dogs are grateful for the love they have found and let their adopters know it all the time.

Whether the dog is in Colorado or Pennsylvania or Texas or Greece or Turkey, Above and Beyond will strive to rescue as many dogs as we can with support from generous donors and our dedicated volunteers.
