COTTON AB#18-052 – M, 3 Years

COTTON AB#18-052 – M, 3 Years

Foster Name:  Cotton

Gender:          Neutered Male

Age:               Estimated about 3

Size/Weight:   He is leggy and long and quite strong.  He is a little skinny and still needs to fill out.

Color:              Mostly white with some caramel spots

Breed:              English setter

Socialization/ training:  He responds to his name & come (sometimes) in the house and loves both treats and praise.    We are working on sit.  He is starting to come when called in the yard but still needs a little work on that—the squirrels are a distraction.  He is very laid back and loves to be next to us.

Good with children:  He has been gentle with our two year old granddaughter as well as being manhandled by our 12 year old granddaughter.

Good with dogs:  He and our setter Violet get along very well, they sleep together and eat next to each other.  They chase each other and the squirrels in our back yard.  He has also interacted well with our son’s dog and our daughter’s two terriers (all of whom play very aggressively).  Meeting unknown dogs on our walks has not been a problem either.

Good with cats:  Unknown.

House trained:  He has had no accidents since his first night with us.  He will go to the door when he wants to go out and barks when he wants to come in.  We have not crated him since the first two nights with us.  We let him have the run of the house when we leave for short periods, and he sleeps on the floor near our bed at night along with our dog and so far have had no accidents.

Leash trained:  We have taken him out in a nature area near us a number of times on a 15 foot long lead and he does not pull on the rope even with our Violet running free.  We do use a soft harness for him rather than connecting the lead to his collar and this works well.

Activity level:  Cotton loves to run in the backyard.  He is fast and has endurance as well.

Fence:  I think a standard suburban sized fenced yard would work well for him although a larger yard would be better.  I would be a little worried about an electric fence just because he’s so fast and I have no experience with them at all.

Behavior:  He is sweet natured and definitely tries to please his people.  There is plenty of enthusiasm when we come home after being gone for an extended time.  We leave the dogs uncrated in the house for up to 4 hours at this point with no messes or destruction.  We are retired and have not left him alone all day so we are not sure of his reaction over an extended period.

Medical History:  No signs of anything wrong at this point.  He is neutered and has had necessary shots.  He will be chipped and given a check-up before adoption.

Comments:  Cotton has been fun to have—I know our Violet will miss him as will we.  He is a very handsome boy with a beautiful tail.  He points very well but I don’t know how he would be as a hunter.  He does not seem to be afraid of loud noises so I would suspect he would hunt well with some training.
