Hi all, Sir William here; you can call me Willie for short.  I
found my way to foster care by way of the rescue
railroad; coming from a kill shelter in Oklahoma...boy oh
boy am I glad about that!  I am a fit and athletic boy at
55 pounds.  I am neutered and heartworm negative,
housetrained, crate trained and I walk pretty well on a
leash.  I thoroughly enjoy a good run around the
backyard and find it great fun to scan for birds and
squirrels.  I am fine with cats.  I have been in foster
homes with various fencing and I haven't challenged any
of them.  I can use a doggie door or ask to go out.  I love
to work for treats!!  Now I need to find a furever home of
my very own.  That sounds so wonderful, I sure would
like that.

So, I'm thinking if I tell you all about me, you'll know if
you're the family for me.

I've had the privilege of being fostered by three
wonderful people; a multiple dog savvy foster home in
Missouri, a vet, and a setter lover in TX.  In Missouri, I
shared a foster home with Australian cattle dogs and rat
terriers.  (Just between you and me, those rat terriers
have NO IDEA they are little!)  I got along with everyone
there and listened well to my foster mom.  She had me sit
before getting breakfast and supper and expected me to
come when she called for me; even when I was in the
backyard with lots of squirrels in the trees!  I was so good
that I would come-a-running as soon as I heard the back
door open!

When I came to stay with the vet, Dr. T. (that’s T for
Terrific) recognized right away that I may have been
abused in the past and that I did not respond well to
forceful treatment.  Now I ask, would you like to be
pushed and pulled around or yelled at???  Exactly my
point.  I can't tell you all about my past, but I was able to
communicate to Dr. T. that I got really nervous when
people pulled on my collar or held me around the neck.
When she did that, I got all stiff and nervous and would
give a low growl.  Dr. T. really worked with me to teach me
that all people are not awful and that I can trust them.
Once I trusted her, I discovered people can be rather
great!  Dr. T. would ask me to do different things for her
like sit, stay, down, come and I really enjoyed following
directions and getting those yummy rewards and gentle
pats.   She was always really respectful of me and I knew
she was a calm leader; someone I could trust.  I gotta tell
you, it felt really nice.  I progressed so well with Dr. T that
I was able to move to another nearby foster home and
spend more time working on my comfort level with new
people and new situations.

Since Sir William has been with us, we are happy to report
that he is doing very well.  He quickly learned to trust and
follow the lead of his new foster mom.  He took a bit
longer with the man in the house but he is not very
involved with the foster dogs and after some
treat/reward/training sessions Sir William is now
comfortable with him too.

He is showing more of his English Setter personality to us,
thanks to all of the efforts of the previous fosters.  He
bonded just as a setter does, comes to you for pets and
attention, puts his paws on my lap and is on his way to
becoming a typical lap setter.  I can gentle roughhouse
with him; he likes playing with me and there are no
growls.  He continues to show quick responses to verbal
commands and turns on a dime when I call him back into
the house.  He may have had previous training.  He’s also
quite a Casanova, looking at me with those big brown
eyes and giving gentle kisses on my hand.  If I say, “Willie
give a kiss, he’ll gently lick the tip of my nose!”

His trust, respect and comfort level is strong so after two
weeks I started taking Sir William out and about.  He
couldn’t have done better on his first outing to Tractor
Supply.  He was relaxed while staff and customers petted
him.  He enjoyed all of the interactions and solicited a few;
sniffing the bum of the customer ahead of us in line – well,
how do you do?!  (It turned out he has cats and horses
too).  Willie even decided he should lean against the
cashier for some loving while we checked out!  And it was
particularly satisfying to see him enjoy his time with the
12 year old girl that sat on the floor giving him love.

A note from Dr. T:
Sir William is an amazing dog... and deserving of a
wonderful home.  This is a dog that needs a calm,
assertive, dog savvy owner who can show Willie what is
expected of him, and who gives him lots of opportunity
for responsibility, activity and rewards.  This boy needs
and responds beautifully to positive task/reward training.
Give him a stable, positive leader/dog home and Willie will
do anything for you.  He’s progressed beautifully in his
time in foster care and has so many amazing attributes;
his adoptive family will be truly blessed.
